There is no such thing as going to Greece and not going to Santorini!
God gave all the blue to Santorini; this sentence is not false! Beautiful white houses, scattered cliff hotels, large and small blue-roofed churches, and most importantly, the clear blue and crystal-clear Aegean Sea. From early morning to sunset, there is inexhaustible beauty in sight, beauty in words.
There are only four things to best enjoy Santorini: rent a car, watch the sunset, watch the sea, and enjoy the hotel. Also don’t forget to get your travel visa if you need one
Car rental
There isn’t much public transportation on the island and the wait times are long. Renting a car will greatly enhance your convenience, let you arrange time more freely, and is more affordable.
However, the uphill and rugged roads along the coast to Oia are not easy to drive. The narrow roads are full of small gravel. They drive very slowly; but foreigners tend to drive fast on very rugged roads. Safety is the most important thing, so be safe and enjoy.
Sunset
You can watch the sunset from the best view point in Oia, from the famous blue-topped church or from the balcony of the hotel (as long as you choose a cliff hotel and room with sea view sunset where you can watch the sunset directly from the balcony).
When the sun disappears completely on the sea, you can hear applause from across the island and it’s absolutely magical.
Watch the sea
The blue sea in the distance is enough to marvel at. But of course, you have to get close to it as well. Sign up for a 5-hour yacht trip that takes you out to not only sightsee but also snorkel.
Some of the places to really enjoy the water as well as get in some beach time are the southernmost beaches of Holy Island, Black Beach and Red Beach. There are a lot of rocks on the black sand beach so be sure to wear appropriate shoes.
Enjoy the hotel
Hotels on the holy island are plentiful and choosing the one with the best view is probably the hardest decision. Many have lovely infinity pools, spas, delicious sea view dining and wonderful Greek hospitality.
There’s nothing like drinking a glass of wine on the balcony of your room and looking out at the breathtaking scenery.
