Dr. Mike Williams personally suffered from a snoring problem and endured multiple surgeries to improve the snoring all to no avail as the snoring persisted. So he began looking for other alternatives about 10 years ago. From researching the dental literature, he discovered that certain types of dental mouthpieces had been shown to improve snoring. The SleepTight is an all-natural solution for snoring and sleep apnea since the need for medication is eliminated or reduced by just holding the jaw forward during sleep. Since mouthpieces were solving the problem, it was an easy project for Dr. Williams as a dentist. After 20 or so attempts a certain design was found to be quite effective for his personal problem.
Along with this research into snoring Dr. Williams was investigating the problem of altitude sickness and discovered that another particular mouthpiece design could help with altitude sickness. The side effects of drugs used to treat altitude sickness are a big problem for some people including Dr. Williams; so he began looking at a mouthpiece as a solution. During this research Dr. Williams created the concept of treating altitude sickness with a mouthpiece and he made a presentation to the International Hypoxia Symposium in 2011regarding this novel idea. These concepts were published in the Hypoxia journal as well as the Wilderness and Mountain Medicine Journal.
As part of this altitude research Dr. Williams met Paul Swann from the UK. Paul is a project manager and developer for the largest mouthguard company in the world.
