Few things in this life are better than a great night’s sleep. Conversely, when sleep goes wrong, there are few things more miserable. In fact, sleep disorders are among the most common complaints of humans these days. In the interest of better sleep and happier humans everywhere, we are pleased to present a few sleep disorders and what you can do about them.
Medical maladies associated with sleep
There are dozens and dozens of sleep disorders, and some are harder to overcome than others. Sleep problems can happen to anyone at any age. Studies show that at least one-third of adults suffer from sleep difficulties at one time or another, says The Better Sleep Guide. Among the most common sleep disorders are apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and insomnia.
Apnea is the name of a medical sleep disorder that’s characterized by intermittent periods during which the sleeper does not breathe. This periodic holding of breath disrupts all phases of the sleep cycle. Apnea is diagnosed in a sleep clinic and may be confirmed when the patient ceases breathing at least five times in a one-hour period. Many apnea sufferers stop breathing as many as 40 to 50 times per hour. If left unchecked, apnea can lead to a host of health problems. Apnea treatment options range from lifestyle changes to breathing therapy and CPAP sleeping devices.
Neurological sleep disorders
Narcolepsy is a troubling disorder that causes sufferers to fall into a deep sleep for no reason at all. As a rule, narcolepsy appears between the ages of 15 and 25, although some narcoleptics are diagnosed at a younger or older age. Some cases of narcolepsy are genetic. Others may be caused by brain injury, hormonal imbalance or systemic infection. Restless leg syndrome is exactly what it sounds like –an insurmountable desire to move the legs when you’re trying to fall asleep. As much as 10 percent of the population may suffer at one time or another from this troubling, sleep-disturbing condition.
When you can’t sleep
The inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep is generally termed ‘insomnia.’ Insomnia can take many forms and it can affect anyone. Some insomniacs fall asleep easily but wake up after a short time. Others take a long time to achieve sleep but have a hard time waking up when they should. Sleeplessness is a serious problem in this country, leading directly or indirectly to numerous workplace accidents and traffic fatalities every year.
