outdoor adventure safetyAn outdoor adventure offers a great way for the entire family to bond. Whether it’s for a hike in a national park or take off for some ATV riding, the whole family can enjoy the unique experience together. Before heading out, however, check out some safety measure to ensure that the whole family stays safe while having fun on the trip.

Pack Basic First Aid Supplies

Regardless of the adventure, be sure to bring a first aid kit stocked with first aid supplies. As the saying goes, its always best to prepare for the worst, than to be caught unprepared in the event of an emergency. Bandages, antiseptic wipes, sunscreen, medicine, and hand sanitizer are just a few of the main items that should be included in a basic first aid kit. If heading out for a serious hike, consider having each family member carrying their own first aid supplies.

Choose Additional Supplies Based on Your Trip Activities

Being prepare for whatever outdoor adventure is undertaken is the best way to ensure a good time. For example, if the plan is hiking at a national park, bring along some safety equipment. A cooling towel will help keep body temperature regulated, reducing the effects of heat stress that can lead to a heat stroke or worse. Bring an electrolyte replacement that will replenish minerals and electrolytes in the body that are lost while exerting oneself should top the list of items to bring. Most electrolyte replacements come in tablet form that can be taken with water. Insect repellents, poison ivy protection, and sting and bite relief pads are additional items to consider.

If the plan is to ride ATVs through the woods, many of the aforementioned items should be brought along. In addition, however, pack bandages and gauze in case a riding accident occurs. Butterfly closures, surgical tape, antibiotic ointment cream, burn dressings, and burn gel packets should all be included.

Leave an Itinerary With A Friend or Neighbor

Taking the right supplies is not the only safety measure one should have in place for your trip. Alerting a neighbor or a friend of the upcoming trip so that they know where and when you will be returning. In the event of a delay in your returning, they will be able to notify the appropriate authorities and direct them as to you whereabouts. Obviously, be sure to leave all contact information, such as a personal cell phone number, the number and address of the hotel/national park at which you’ll be staying.

Discuss Safety With All Members of the Family

Never leave for a trip without first discussing safety with all members of the family. It can’t be preached enough: there is no replacement for being properly prepared. Have emergency action plans in place and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Be sure each person has a safety kit and knows how to use each contained therein. Talking about safety will help everyone understand how its importance, and ensure they know what to do if an emergency situation occurs.

Taking a family vacation of any kind, whether it involves a fun adventure or even just a typical stay in a hotel, should always be prepared for extensively. Having multiple safety measures in place can help address any situation that may aris.. Packing the proper supplies, leaving an itinerary with a friend, and discussing safety with all members of the family are just the beginning steps to making sure your family has a safe vacation.
