New Apartment Checklist + Balanced Life

apartmentWhen it comes to moving apartments, there’s a distinct pattern to the process. It starts with lots of excitement about your impending move. Then there’s the mad rushing around gathering all the supplies you need for packing. After that, it’s time to knuckle down and get the hard work done. It’s then when you realize there aren’t enough hours in the day and you seriously miscalculated how long things would take. When moving day finally arrives, after what seems like a lifetime living out of boxes, wearing the same set of clothes and only using one plate, you find yourself in your new apartment. Then you realize you’ve got to start all over again. Add complications with utility supplies, pets, children, and work, and it all becomes very stressful. Luckily, there are things you can do to help keep your life balanced and make the whole moving process more of a pleasure, rather than a chore.

Accept Stress is Part of the Process

If you can accept that stress is an inevitable part of the moving process, it makes it much easier to handle. It’s also going to help you plan ways to cope. Put yourself in any demanding situation, and your natural human response is stress. It’s then when you realize there aren’t enough hours in the day and you seriously miscalculated how long things would take. This goes double if you are moving abroad and have scoured through Amsterdam apartments for rent to find the best one, and then you have to put into place the best way to move across the pond.  Acknowledge it when it happens but don’t let it put you off what you’re trying to achieve.

Give Yourself Time

When it comes to moving, there aren’t enough hours in the day for all the preparations. That’s why it’s vital to start the process as soon as possible. Give yourself enough time for packing and unpacking and don’t forget other aspects of moving home such as researching and selecting a moving company, setting up utilities in your new apartment, and cleaning the apartment. Renters insurance is something else you need to get organized. For example, if you want to know how much is renters insurance, Jetty.com can help.

Take Care of Your Emotional Needs

If you’re moving against your wishes, it’s only natural to feel sad about leaving. Many people experience feelings of grief when moving. Don’t be afraid to experience your emotions. Choosing not to ignore them will help you move to a happier emotional space.

Be Organized

Organization is critical if you want your move to be less stressful. All aspects of a move will be easier if you make organization a priority. That includes sorting and labeling boxes, organizing new leases, contracts with your movers, and much more.

Use Professional Movers

If your budget allows, it’s always a good idea to hire professional movers to help with your move. A professional moving company can handle many of the major tasks. They can do all the heavy lifting, pack your things, safely wrap and transport fragile items.

Ask for Help

There may be times during the move that you feel completely overwhelmed. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help because that’s what friends and family are for. Of course they’re there to share the good times with you, but they’re also there for you during times of transition. With a support system around you, don’t feel like you’ve got to go it alone.

Look After Yourself

When there’s so much to be done, it’s easy to forget about looking after yourself. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, rest, eat well, and try to fit in a spot of exercise. Moving apartments can take a lot out of you both mentally and physically, and you might find yourself running on empty very quickly if you don’t look after yourself.
