Keeping The Bowels Moving

bowel healthIf you experience issues with maintaining a regular bowel system, then you might want to consider taking laxatives. A laxative is a substance that you can get over the counter or prescribed by your doctor that can help loosen the material in the intestines. It will help promote a bowel movement, so you should take the laxative when you don’t plan on leaving the home.

A typical laxative that you would take to help ease constipation is generally safe to take over an extended period of time, but once you see that your system is regulated, you should stop taking the laxative. They have the potential to be addicting. Some people who have colostomies or who have irritable bowel syndrome will benefit from taking a laxative. It’s also a common substance for people who don’t have a lot of fiber in their diet.

Most effects can be seen in about 12 hours. If you don’t see any kind of movement with the bowels, you should probably see a doctor. When you take a laxative, it’s advisable to drink more water so that your body doesn’t get dehydrated. You want to be aware of any kind of bloating, and if you experience this, you can simply lower the amount of the laxative that you take or decrease the amount of fiber that you consume. A stool softener is a type of laxative that is ideal for older people and women who are pregnant. These substances ease the passage of materials through the bowels.

Some medical procedures require the intestines to be completely clean. An example is a colonoscopy. The doctor will often give you a liquid to drink the day before the procedure as well as recommend taking a laxative. The medication often works very quickly. You will probably experience results of the medication for a few hours, so it’s important to be at home so that you are comfortable. The doctor will be able to have a better view of the inside of the intestines with them being completely clear of waste materials.

There are natural substances that you can take that will give the same results as a laxative. Apples are ideal if you don’t want the processed substances that you get at retail stores and pharmacies. You can also consume licorice or grapes. Aloe Vera is another laxative that you can get in juice form. This can be added to other ingredients for a healthy shake.
