How To Deal With Your Partner’s Frustrating Habits

toxic relationshipTalking to someone about their habits can be a difficult process. Many people feel that they shouldn’t have to change the way they live to suit other people, but the things that your partner does will almost always have an impact on your life. This means that when they are doing something you don’t like, emotions like frustration and disappointment can arise. Of course, though, you shouldn’t have to live like this, and most people are willing to change their habits if it is important to someone they care about. Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to approach this sort of issue with the person you love.

Talking Honestly

To start, this whole process will be pointless if you aren’t honest with your partner. While you may feel angry or upset, it’s important to remember that having an argument won’t get you anywhere. This makes it crucial that you approach them honestly, while also working hard to keep yourself under control. It can be worth reading up on some ways to word what you want to say before you approach this. While rehearsing may seem a little over the top, it can make it much easier to avoid being hurtful or saying things that you don’t actually mean. People often hurt each other’s feelings by accident when they are talking about issues like this.

While you don’t want to make them feel bad about their habits, it’s important to make sure that you make sure that they know it has a negative impact on you. You can explain why their actions make you unhappy, while also offering to make similar changes if there are things that your partner would like you to change. This process should always be a two-way street, with both sides being able to voice their ideas and concerns.

Offering Support

This next area is one that you have to be very careful with. Offering support to help someone with a habit can make it seem like you are being controlling, and this makes it worth looking for ways to make this feel like they have come to the decision on their own. Dropping subtle hints is a good way to do this, while also being ready to provide support whenever they need it. People can often make their partner feel a lot better about a bad habit when they are simply there for them, giving them an easier route to solving the problem without having to put you both through hell. This sort of support can go beyond simply talking to them, but you need to make sure that you tread carefully.

Come To A Compromise

Compromise is often the best solution to an issue like this. It can be incredibly difficult to solve a situation when two people have different ideas, and this can make it worth looking for a solution that satisfies both parties. A great example of this can come in the form of substance abuse. If your partner regularly smokes cannabis with tobacco in the house, you could ask them to look at using glass bongs to lower the smell and secondhand impact of this activity. This sort of compromise is usually quite easy to find, with people realising the issues they have are much smaller than the whole issue they thought they were up against.

Facing The Facts

Coming to a compromise that makes both people happy is always the best resolution to an issue like this. Of course, though, this isn’t always possible, and you may not be able to control the toll that this sort of argument has if it gets out of hand. In this instance, it could be woerth facing the facts and breaking up your relationship before the habits you don’t like lead to bitterness or other negative emotions. This can be difficult, but it’s always best to put your future happiness first, and this can make it worth breaking up to make sure that you can start working to improve your situation.

With all of this in mind, you should be feeling much better about the idea of talking to your partner about their frustrating habits. This process can be difficult, with a lot of people finding it hard to be honest with the people they care about. Of course, though, it’s always better to talk something like this through than to let it fester.
