How to Care for Your Eyesight

eyesight careMany people take their vision for granted and fail to realize its importance until their eye health starts to deteriorate. Fortunately, there are things we can do to improve our eyesight and prevent the development of ocular conditions, such as cataracts or macular degeneration.

Enjoy a Healthy Diet

Healthy foods aren’t just for losing weight, because they can also improve your eye health. It is important you consume foods offering many different nutrients, such as vitamin C and E, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and lutein.

You can find all these nutrients and more in nuts, leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and beans. The consumption of all the above will also reduce your likelihood of obesity, which could otherwise result in the development of type 2 diabetes that has the potential to cause blindness.

Protect Your Vision with Sunglasses

If you fail to protect your eyesight in warmer temperatures, the sun’s powerful ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your chances of an ocular condition. You should therefore wear sunglasses that can block 99% of the UVA and UVB rays.

If you wear contact lenses, select a pair that provides UV protection in the summer sun. You can see Contact Lenses UK for more choices, but you should still wear sunglasses to be on the safe side.

Visit an Optometrist/Ophthalmologist

There is no better way to care for your vision than by making regular appointments with an experienced optometrist, such as St. George Eye Care. Children and adults should receive regular eye exams to prevent an ocular condition. For example, an optometrist could spot a health condition during an eye exam, such as glaucoma, which has signs or symptoms. The earlier an optometrist or ophthalmologist discovers a problem, the easier it will be to protect your vision.

Stop Smoking

It is essential you stop smoking if you want to maintain your vision, because the bad habit could cause damage to the optic nerve, whilst increasing the likelihood of macular degeneration or cataracts. While smoking is addictive, it is possible to quit. Speak to your doctor about how you can stop the bad habit once and for all.

Step Away from the Computer

It’s never a good idea to spend hours staring at a computer screen, because this can cause all sorts of health problems, such as blurred vision, eye strain, dry eyes, headaches and neck, shoulder and back pain. Go for a walk to give your eyesight a break, and visit an optometrist to see if they can provide a glasses or contact lense prescription that is suitable for staring at a computer screen. If you regularly use a computer, try to rest your eyes every 20 minutes, and look twenty feet away for twenty seconds.

Don’t Forget Protective Eyewear

Safety eyewear is essential for embarking with jobs that require airborne materials. Whether you are performing a job at home or at work, you must wear protective glasses to ensure your eyesight is not at risk. Also, if you play a physical sport with airborne equipment, such as racquetball, lacrosse or hockey, you must always wear safety glasses to protect your vision.
