sleepPlanning is important in every aspect of our life, from work to arranging a vacation, and that also applies to your health and wellbeing. Formulating a wellness plan allows you to think about what you could improve in relation to your health, and find solutions and lifestyle changes that will get you to where you want to be. Common elements in a wellness plan could be exercising more, eating healthily or ensuring that you take in the right vitamins and minerals every day, but any wellness plan should also include sleep on it. Here are three reasons why sleep is vital to your wellness, and tips on getting a better sleep.

Reduce Your Stress Levels

We live in a very fast paced and constantly changing world, and that’s why many of us lead stressful lives. Stress is one of the major causes of illness, so we owe it to ourselves to do all we can to reduce our stress levels. One way to do that is to meditate or practice yoga, but the best stress buster of them all is a good sleep. Studies have shown that poor quality sleep, interrupted sleep patterns or simply not enough sleep encourages the body to produce stress hormones, and of course if you have trouble sleeping, anxiety over that can also raise your stress levels.

Lower Your Blood Pressure

It’s essential that we have the right blood pressure, as high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a major contributor to strokes and heart attacks. If you have particularly high blood pressure, your physician may prescribe drugs to keep it under control, but a pill free way to lower your blood pressure is to have a good quality sleep. It can also improve your health in general, as the body produces protein molecules while it’s in a state of deep sleep; this protein can in turn help your body fight off infections such as the common cold.

Improve Your Mood and Mental Alertness

We all know that if we don’t get enough sleep, we feel tired and irritable, and this can lead to us taking it out on those we love the most. A tired mind is also a less alert mind, so if you’re frequently tired, you won’t be able to perform your best at those daily tasks that are so important – whether they be at work, college or the home. When you’ve slept well on a regular basis, you’ll notice a huge difference in how you feel and how you react to things, and that can impress your boss at work and your loved ones at home.

How to Get a Better Sleep

There are some simple tips that can make it much more likely to have a good night’s sleep. Firstly, avoid stimulants such as coffee, wine or chocolate in the run up to bedtime; you should also refrain from looking at your mobile phone before bed, as the blue light emitted by phone screens can make it harder for you to sleep. One of the most effective ways to achieve a better sleep is to take magnesium supplements, as they power up GABA receptors that encourage relaxation. As shown at  https://www.vitamonk.com/blogs/health/magnesium-sleep-benefits, the use of magnesium to aid sleep has been proved at a number of clinical trials, and taking magnesium glycinate between one and two hours before bedtime can produce great results.

Experts say that we should aim to sleep for between six and eight hours every night. When you achieve this, you’ll feel more alert, happier, healthier and less stressed. That’s why having a great sleep should be central to any wellness plan, and magnesium supplements can help you achieve it.
