Discovering Canada’s culinary hot spots: 4 destinations you shouldn’t miss

torontoWhile Canada may not have centuries of food traditions that nations like Italy, France, or Japan boast, this young nation is starting to come into its own as the years go by. In this article, we’ll highlight four cities where you won’t be lacking for amazing places to eat.

1) Nanaimo, British Columbia

Compared to the other cities on this list, Nanaimo certainly stands out. What does this small city on the Central East Coast of Vancouver Island offer that bigger centers don’t? Only this nation’s most beloved dessert: the horribly addictive Nanaimo Bar.

This might not be the healthiest thing you could be eating, a treat isn’t the worst thing every once in a while, especially when it comes with tonnes of chocolate, vanilla icing in the middle, and a graham cookie base.

Better yet, bakeries all about the town serve their own version of this no-bake classic, so get a Nanaimo Trail map from the local tourism office and take a day out of your usual healthy eating routine and indulge.

When dinner comes around, head out to a sushi place: the fish used is as fresh as any you’ll find in Canada, so don’t miss the chance to sample the best tuna roll this side of the Pacific.

After a day filled with aggressive eating, you’ll probably want to enjoy some low-key entertainment back at the hotel. Rather than default to watching television or movies, though, know that the internet has plenty of awesome options as well.

Internet gaming is chief among them, as there are plenty of sites out there which offer time-tested games like blackjack, roulette, and slots. At the end of the night, you might end up in profit or hit a bonus, which could end up paying for the day of grazing.

Interested? Read more here and turn your evenings into more exciting, engaging affairs.

2) Edmonton, Alberta

Another interesting inclusion due to it having a reputation for being a bland place, Edmonton is proving this stereotype and others to be wrong as its dining scene has been on the rise in recent years.

Of the ten restaurants honoured for being the best new establishments in Canada last year, three of them came from the City of Champions.

From multiple authentic Mexican eateries to chic Scandinavian style cafes, the creativity of the establishments that have been popping up here will treat your taste buds to a non-stop adventure with every meal you have while in E-Town.

3) Toronto, Ontario

The largest city in the country is a natural choice for those searching for exceptional eats while in Canada, and while its population and wealth base guarantees a base of excellent eateries, this town’s diversity is its greatest strength.

With almost every ethnicity on Earth having a community here, you can travel around the world without ever having to leave the city limits.

4) Halifax, Nova Scotia

While it may be Vancouver’s more humble cousin, Halifax has a unique culinary scene that stands on its own. From lobster served fresh off the boat in-season to the messy but delicious Halifax donair, you won’t have to subsist on fast causal food during your stay here.

End your visit with a fun night on the town – with one of the greatest density of bars and pubs per square kilometre in Canada, you’ll have no shortage of venues to visit before the 3:30 am last call hits.
