5 Top Tips for Staying Healthy on Holiday

stress-free travel tipsWe could all do with being a bit more healthy but getting and staying healthy requires perseverance. Going on holiday doesn’t have to mean putting your healthy living on hold. Here are 5 top tips for staying healthy on your next holiday.

Treat Yourself the Right Way

While you are on holiday, it is only natural to want to treat yourself. After all, if you can’t be indulgent when on your holidays, when can you be? If you are already observing a carefully controlled diet, you will be used to exercising restraint and will probably have a reasonable degree of self control. You don’t want these skills to slip away from you while you are on holiday. Therefore, when you do treat yourself, make sure that you exercise a little more restraint than usual.

Depending on where you are going on holiday, and where you are coming from, you might be heading somewhere with a completely different cuisine to the ones you’re used to. This can present problems for those who are trying to be careful about exactly what they eat, so it is always a good idea to do a little research beforehand to find out what the food will be like wherever you decide to holiday.

If the country or region you visit makes much of their food using the same ingredients that you would use at home then, even if the dishes they make are usually different, you should have an easier time eating healthily while on holiday. There are some places in the world where the sweet treats are just too good to pass up, however.  Just make sure not to eat them every day.

Moderation is the key. As long as you don’t overdo it, you can get away with eating just about anything you want.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Alcohol is one of the greatest enemies we have in the battle for a better body. For some reason, because alcohol comes in liquid form, we find it all too easy to ignore what we know to be true – it is really bad for us. Of course, drinking alcohol is a normal cultural practice in the majority of the world, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a drink while on holiday.

Like we said above though, moderation is the key. If you are hoping to come back from your holiday at least as healthy as when you left, minimising your alcohol intake is an important step to take. If you will be travelling as part of a group, there can often be social pressure to take part in the drinking. You should politely decline and explain the situation to your companions. If you’re lucky, one or two of them might even join you in your pursuit of staying healthy.

As with food, you might be facing some unfamiliar and unusual alcohol choices. All alcohol has a high calorie content, there’s no way around that, but you can help to keep the calories down by avoiding mixers, especially fizzy mixers like Pepsi. Also remain mindful of the effect that alcohol can have on your appetite, as food that might make you feel queasy normally can seem tempting when you’re a little inebriated.

Stay Active

For some people, for reasons that continue to elude us, going on holiday means they intend to just sit around in slightly nicer settings. It seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to just to secure a better spot under the sun, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

But if you are making healthy living a specific goal for your time away, you will want to do more than simply laze about all day. There is a whole world out there to be seen! No matter where your holiday destination is, there will be things to do, history to discover, and new sights to be seen. The internet is an excellent tool for researching destinations before you go, but it is physical travel guides that still reign supreme for those who want to explore and discover hidden treasures.

If you will be visiting a city like Paris, try to make a day of it and walk between the various attractions. Take a look at the products offered by https://fastpasstours.com/, they include tickets to many of Paris’ most popular attractions and allow you to skip the queue for many of them. This means that you won’t have to waste time waiting in line and can instead remain active and get more done in the time you have.

Keep Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of those simple and important pieces of health advice that we overlook all too often. Our bodies are mostly water, and they need a steady supply of water in order to function properly. It takes surprisingly little to make us dehydrated, especially in warmer weather. If your holiday destination is significantly warmer than you are used to, make sure that you account for this when planning what to bring.

If you know that staying hydrated isn’t usually a priority for you, and you want to change that while on holiday, invest in a water bottle. Buying a drink every time you feel thirsty is going to very quickly eat into the money you have available for enjoying yourself. Not only is refilling a water bottle much cheaper, and environmentally friendly, water itself is the best way of rehydrating yourself.

Of course, there’s no reason you have to use water. Just make sure that you are aware of the caloric and sugar content of any other drinks you consider turning to. As we said earlier, it’s okay to treat yourself now and then while on holiday, but make sure not to overdo it. Fizzy drinks are another commonly overlooked source of calories that can sink any dieting effort.

Bring Your Good Habits with You

If you have already put a great deal of time and effort into improving your overall health while at home, you don’t want to let all of that hard work slip away as soon as you leave for your holiday. If you do allow this to happen, you will find it harder to pick things up again when you get home. It can also quickly demotivate you while you are on holiday, meaning that a single small transgression can snowball into a total breakdown of your diet regimen.

In fact, a holiday is the perfect opportunity to make some new good habits. Forming or breaking habits takes quite some time, and it requires a consistent approach. Hopefully, you will feel a lot less stressed and a lot more relaxed while on holiday. This should make it easier to motivate yourself into making or breaking some of the tougher to crack habits. Start small, and don’t overdo it. If you become too hung up on your dieting, it can end up detracting from your holiday experience.

Staying healthy often feels more difficult today than ever before. Whether it’s finding the time to get in exercise, or the time to prepare our own healthy meals, our fast-paced world isn’t ideally suited for the health conscious. Taking a holiday is a chance to get away from the stresses of everyday life and to relax, while also taking in a new place and people. You should take advantage of the holiday vibe to keep you motivated so that you keep up your best healthy habits.
