Body Butter vs. Body Lotion

Body butterYou want to keep your skin feeling soft and healthy. However, navigating the various body care products can be confusing. You’re probably familiar with body lotion, but what is body butter? And is it better for your skin?

If you’re looking for the right body moisturizer for dry skin, it helps to know the difference between body butter and lotion. When it comes to body butter vs lotion, understanding the differences in the product’s ingredients, hydration, and texture will help you find the right moisturizer for your needs.

What is Body Butter?

Like body lotion, body butter is an emollient. These products serve to soften or soothe the skin by hydrating it and relieving dryness.

The difference between body butter and lotion is that body butter contains fat as a primary ingredient. Many body butters use shea butter. Other fat ingredients you may find in body butter include jojoba oil, cocoa oil, and palm oil.

Ingredients of Body Butter vs. Lotion

Body lotion and body butter both contain an emollient carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil. They may also contain essential oils for natural fragrance. However, not all ingredients are the same.

Lotions

Lotions include glycerin or another humectant to help bind water and pull it into the skin. They may contain a plant-based butter or oil in a smaller concentration than body butter. A main ingredient in body lotion is water as a solvent for the other components. To prevent bacterial growth, lotions also contain a preservative such as citric acid.

Butters

The core ingredient in body butter is a plant-based fat. Depending on the brand, the product may also contain essential oils or plant extracts like lanolin. Some body butters may have thickeners or antioxidants. Preservatives are not really needed for body butter, and there is no added water.

Hydration of Body Lotion vs. Body Butter

Both body lotions and body butters help to moisturize the skin, but they work differently and are most beneficial for different skin types.

The water content of body lotion helps the skin to absorb it quickly. It’s best for everyday use on combination, normal, or slightly dry skin. You can apply lotion during the day because it won’t leave a greasy feeling. This type of product works well in warm, humid conditions.

Body butter is thicker and works better on dry, rough or sensitive skin. The skin absorbs the fatty acid contents more slowly than lotion, but butters provide more intense, longer-lasting hydration. Because the butter content can make the skin feel greasy, it’s best for overnight use.

Texture of Body Lotion vs. Butter

Body lotion has a higher water content which gives it a creamier, liquid consistency. This content allows the skin to absorb lotion quickly, is easier to apply, and gives it a lighter feel.

Body butter has a thick, rich consistency similar to whipped butter. It gives you a luxurious feel and can help soothe dry, irritated skin and smooth rough patches over your elbows. However, the thick consistency can also clog pores. If you’re prone to acne or eczema, consult with your doctor to determine the best body butter for dry skin.

When you understand the difference between body butter and body lotion, it’s easier to choose the best moisturizers for your dry skin needs. Body butter is good for winter and dry climates or to treat dry skin. Lotions help with mild dryness and are good for daily use. Apply each as needed to keep your skin healthy.
