Whether due to injury or illness, ongoing ankle pain can all but ruin one’s quality of life. In some cases, a total joint replacement may be called for, which can greatly increase mobility while also reducing the level of pain experienced. For this reason, ankle surgery can be a great option for those suffering from chronic pain.

 

In the event that surgery is required, preparation is key to ensuring a safe and successful procedure. The following tips can help patients before, during, and even after surgery. The post-surgery recovery is particularly important, as this vital healing period can have an impact on the overall efficacy of one’s surgery.

 

Pre-Surgery Preparation

 

There are many practical measures one can undertake to make certain the day of the surgery goes smoothly. If possible, find a person who can offer assistance during the period immediately following the procedure. Many patients feel disoriented due to the effects of the anesthetic, which renders activities such as driving highly dangerous.

 

When arriving at the hospital or clinic, it’s important to bring all the required items one will need. This includes any must-have medications, as well as loose fitting clothing to wear after the procedure.
The pre-surgery period is also a good time to bring up any pertinent questions with the medical staff, including post-operative instructions, details of the recovery period, etc.

 

Post-Recovery Period

Managing pain can also be important. Prolonged discomfort can affect both the mental and physical states of a patient, which can contribute to a less than pleasing recovery experience. That’s why proper pain management should be an essential part of the recovery process.

 

While medication will most certainly play a role in post-recovery pain management, there are a number of other methods available that can ease the discomfort experienced by recovering patients. These include:

 

  • Elevating the Foot – This can reduce swelling, while also decreasing pain and discomfort stemming from the surgical site.

 

  • Icing the Affected Area – Ice packs can be a great way to diminish pain, but they should be used judiciously.

 

  • Physical Activity – Once approved by a doctor, the patient can resume light physical movement. This can increase flexibility in the area, which can then help to reduce pain.

Joint replacement surgery can have a profound effect on patients suffering from long-term ailments. By taking the proper steps to prepare for surgery, patients can experience a relatively stress-free recovery.
