What to Do When You Need a Doctor After Your Regular GP Is Closed

doctor's officeIllness and minor injuries rarely follow your doctor’s opening hours. A fever that develops in the evening, a worsening infection over the weekend, or an unexpected injury can leave you wondering whether you should wait until your regular GP reopens or seek medical care sooner.

For non-life-threatening health concerns, after-hours doctors can provide medical assessment outside standard clinic hours. Knowing what options are available and recognising when a condition needs urgent or emergency care can help you make a more informed decision.

Should You Wait Until Your Regular GP Reopens?

Not every illness requires immediate medical attention. If your symptoms are mild, stable and improving, you may be able to manage them at home and contact your regular GP when the practice reopens.

However, waiting may not be appropriate when:

  • Symptoms are getting worse
  • Pain or discomfort is becoming difficult to manage
  • You are unable to maintain adequate fluid intake
  • You have developed a new or concerning symptom
  • An injury requires assessment or wound care
  • You need medical advice outside your regular doctor’s opening hours

In these circumstances, an after-hours GP can assess your condition and advise whether further treatment or follow-up is required.

What Can an After-Hours GP Treat?

After-hours GP services can assess a broad range of non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Common reasons for an after-hours consultation include:

  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Ear infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Minor skin infections
  • Mild allergic reactions without breathing difficulty
  • Minor cuts and wounds
  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor burns
  • Sporting injuries
  • Some workplace injuries

The appropriate treatment depends on the individual patient’s symptoms, medical history and clinical assessment.

What Happens During an After-Hours Appointment?

Your consultation will generally begin with questions about your symptoms, when they started, and whether they have changed.

The doctor may:

  • Review your relevant medical history
  • Check your current medications and allergies
  • Perform a physical examination
  • Assess the severity of your condition
  • Recommend appropriate treatment
  • Arrange pathology or imaging where clinically indicated
  • Provide a referral if specialist or hospital care is required
  • Recommend follow-up with your regular GP

Medication is prescribed only when clinically appropriate following an individual assessment. An after-hours consultation does not automatically mean that a prescription or particular treatment will be provided.

What If You Need Tests or Imaging?

Some after-hours clinics have access to diagnostic services such as pathology and medical imaging.

If your doctor believes further investigation is necessary, they may recommend an appropriate test or referral. This can be particularly useful when assessing certain injuries or illnesses that cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone.

The need for testing is determined by the doctor based on your individual clinical presentation.

What If You Need a Medical Certificate?

If your illness or injury affects your ability to work, study or perform normal activities, you can discuss this with your doctor during the consultation.

A medical certificate may be provided where clinically appropriate. The decision is based on the doctor’s assessment rather than simply on a patient’s request.

How Do You Decide Where to Go?

A simple way to approach the decision is to consider the severity of your symptoms.

Mild and improving:

Home care and follow-up with your regular GP may be appropriate.

Needs medical attention but isn’t life-threatening:
An after-hours GP may be an appropriate option when your regular doctor is unavailable.

Severe or potentially life-threatening:
Emergency medical care is required.

If you are uncertain about the urgency of your symptoms, seek professional medical advice rather than relying solely on an online article.

When Should You Go to an Emergency Department?

After-hours GPs are not intended to replace emergency services.

Call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Signs of stroke
  • Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Serious head injuries
  • Major trauma
  • Severe burns
  • Anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction
  • A rapidly deteriorating condition

Emergency departments prioritise patients according to clinical urgency, so serious or life-threatening symptoms should never be delayed while trying to arrange an after-hours GP appointment.

How to Prepare for an After-Hours GP Visit

Having relevant information available can make your consultation more efficient.

Consider bringing or knowing:

  • Your Medicare details
  • Current medications
  • Known allergies
  • Relevant medical history
  • Details of when your symptoms started
  • Any treatments you have already tried
  • Relevant information about an injury or accident

If you’re attending because of an injury, explaining how it happened and when it occurred can help your doctor assess the situation.

What If You Need Care at Night?

Some health concerns develop late in the evening, after most GP practices have closed. A night doctor can provide medical assessment for appropriate non-emergency conditions during these hours.

If you’re searching for a night doctor in Perth, GP After Hours Subiaco provides after-hours GP consultations for a range of illnesses and minor injuries. The clinic is located within St John of God Subiaco Hospital and offers Australian-trained, vocationally registered GPs, online bookings and access to pathology and imaging where clinically appropriate.

Don’t Ignore a Health Problem Simply Because Your GP Is Closed

Your regular GP remains an important part of your ongoing healthcare, but you don’t necessarily need to wait until the next business day when a non-life-threatening health concern needs attention.

After-hours doctors can provide assessment and appropriate medical advice when your usual practice is unavailable, while emergency departments remain the appropriate setting for serious or life-threatening conditions.

Important: This article provides general health information only and is not a substitute for personalised medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 000 immediately or attend your nearest emergency department.
