Dental Implants vs Partial Plates: Which Is Best For You?

oral health teethHaving good teeth is important for dental health but also for practical reasons. When we lose teeth, it’s important to think about replacing them. If you don’t, then eating is difficult and smiling can be a nightmare.

Two common ways to replace missing teeth are dental implants and partial plates. How do you know which option you should go for? It takes understanding what each one is so you can make an informed decision. In this article, we will go over whether you should get implants or a partial crown next time you go to TexSmiles Dental.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants work by putting a metal post, usually made of titanium, into the jawbone. This post acts like a root for the new tooth. On top of this metal post, a dentist puts an artificial tooth. This tooth is made to look and feel like your natural teeth.

Getting a dental implant is a process that takes several steps and can last several months. First, the dentist checks if your jawbone can hold the implant. If it can, they place the metal post in your jawbone. You then wait for the bone to grow around the implant.

This can take a few months. Once the implant is stable, the dentist puts a connector, called an abutment, on top of it. Finally, the artificial tooth, or crown, is attached to the abutment.

One of the best things about dental implants is that they can last a very long time, often many years or even a lifetime, with good care. They are strong and durable, which means you can eat normally.

What are partial plates?

Partial plates are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike dental implants, these are not permanently fixed in your mouth. They are made out of a metal or plastic frame that holds the artificial teeth. The frame is designed to fit snugly in your mouth and is supported by your remaining natural teeth and gums.

To get partial plates, your dentist first takes impressions of your mouth. This means that the partial plate will fit comfortably and match your bite. Once the partial plates are made, the dentist will adjust them to make sure they fit well and feel comfortable. You can take them out for cleaning and while sleeping.

What are the costs?

Generally, dental implants are more expensive than partial plates. The price of dental implants can vary a lot depending on where you live. If you live in a high cost of living area, expect to pay several thousand dollars for an implant. This cost usually covers the surgery for placing the implant, the post, and the crown.

Partial plates, on the other hand, tend to be less expensive. The lower cost can make them a more appealing choice for some people. However, it’s important to remember that partial plates may need more repairs or replacements over time, which can add to their overall cost.
