Why it is Important to Maintain Optimal Gut Health

stomach trouble travelThe human body is a complex system of organs, hormones and cells. The gut is one of the most important systems in our bodies, as it absorbs nutrients and protects us from toxins and pathogens. In this article we will look at what keeps the gut healthy, how to maintain it through diet and lifestyle choices, and why taking care of your gut may be necessary for optimal health.

What is the Gut Microbiome?

The gut microbiome is a complex and delicate ecosystem of over 100 trillion microorganisms that co-exist with us in our gastrointestinal tract.

Gut bacteria are generally divided into three categories: good, bad and sometimes neutral (also known as opportunistic).

Why is a Healthy Gut Microbiome Important?

What does your gut microbiome do for you?

  • Digestion. The gut microbiome breaks down food, ensuring nutrients are absorbed into the body and waste is expelled.
  • Immune system. Your immune system uses signals from your gut microbiota to regulate its activity, so when it’s out of balance, this can cause inflammation in the body and lead to disease symptoms such as allergies or autoimmune disorders like diabetes and Crohn’s disease.
  • Brain health. The brain has a direct connection with the gut via what is known as the ‘gut-brain axis’ — an interaction between brain cells (neurons) in our central nervous system with those located in our digestive tract (enteric nervous system). This connection plays a crucial role in controlling moods, behavior patterns and cognitive functions like memory; research has shown that there could be an association between certain mental disorders, such as anxiety or depression with intestinal bacteria imbalances.

How Can You Maintain a Healthy Gut Microbiome?

The best way to maintain your gut microbiome is to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. You should also get enough sleep, avoid stress, and take probiotic supplements.

You can control the bacteria in your gut by changing what you eat. Foods that support a good gut microbiome include:

  • Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha tea and kefir
  • Yogurt (goat’s milk is especially beneficial)

What Are Probiotics and Prebiotics?

Probiotics are good bacteria found in fermented foods, such as yogurt and kefir. They can also be found in supplements and are a common ingredient in many commercial yogurts.

Prebiotics are friendly sugars that support the growth of good bacteria in our gut. They can be found naturally in some foods like Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, chicory root, leeks and whole grains.

Probiotics and prebiotics help maintain optimal gut health by improving digestion and boosting immunity.

For those seeking to enhance their gut health further, look out for the Best Probiotic Supplements that go well with your preferences.

Not All Probiotics Are Created Equal

Not all probiotic supplements are equal! Some can only be found in liquids (like kefir or kombucha tea), while others come in pill form, like the various formulas that SMP Nutra offers. They’re also not all meant for everyone: some strains are better suited for certain conditions than others, and some are better for children than adults.

Conclusion

Probiotics are great for your gut health, but they aren’t the same thing as prebiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can be found in foods like yogurt and sauerkraut, or taken in supplement form. They help to promote a healthy digestive system by encouraging the growth of good bacteria in the gut.

On the other hand, prebiotics are nutrients that feed this good bacteria so it can grow and thrive. Prebiotics include things like fiber from whole grains and vegetables; these foods are also rich in vitamins A and K2, which help keep your immune system running smoothly!

Both probiotics & prebiotic supplements should be part of your daily routine if you want to maintain optimal gut health – but they need not come from one source only! You could try adding some extra probiotic supplements into your diet, while also increasing how much fiber you get through regular meals on a daily basis – such as breakfast cereals with oats sprinkled over top.
