Back MassagerYou might have had those experiences yourself when you wake up or move into a certain position and suddenly feel pain in your back. While certain conditions can be the cause of your aches and pains, a lot of the time back problems can come down to poor posture or using furniture that doesn’t give you the right support. If you have noticed your back is getting stiff or sore more often lately, here are some tips that might help you soothe these symptoms and resolve the issue.

Invest in Better Furniture

If you do work at a desk all day, make sure that you’re sitting on an ergonomic chair that is aligned properly with your desk. This type of furniture is designed to offer the right support for your back, neck, and legs while you’re sitting in front of a computer for hours at a time. You should also make sure that you’re getting up to stretch your legs at regular intervals. Alternatively, you can spend part of your day working at a standing desk to help stretch your body out, but again, make sure the desk is at the correct height so that you’re not hunched over it.

Another piece of furniture that could be causing your back troubles is a poor-quality mattress. If you find yourself struggling to sleep through the night because you’re uncomfortable, and your back pain seems to be at its worst when you’re trying to get out of bed in the morning, your mattress is the likely culprit. Invest in a better-quality mattress that is giving your back support, and always test mattresses before you buy them, as different people will find different types of mattresses comfortable/supportive.

Stretches and Physical Activity

Yoga and Pilates are particularly useful for helping ease back pain and strengthening your core muscles which will also help resolve the problem. More physical activity can also help, but be careful not to overdo it if your back pain is flaring up. Swimming could be a good exercise, as it doesn’t put pressure on your joints, or cycling or even gentle walks each day.

Ask the Doctor

If your back pain is very bad and all of the above has not worked for you, see a doctor as soon as possible. While back pain usually isn’t something serious but rather due to bad posture, it can be a symptom of sciatica, a slipped disc in your spine or even degenerative diseases. Your doctor will be able to do further tests to get to the root cause of your back pain and then recommend treatments to help you. If you don’t want to wait for the doctor’s referral for tests, consider using Express MRI for quicker results without the need for a doctor’s referral.

Back pain can be debilitating at times, and it is always uncomfortable, but usually, you can find it easy to manage by improving your posture and using over-the-counter pain relief. However, if you are facing persistent back pain and nothing you try at home works, see your doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis and assistance.
