What Are the Key Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Exercise for Women?

fitness programsWe associate the word “healthcare” with immunizations, lab tests, and doctor visits. But, there are several other “controllable factors” in our lives that can negatively or positively impact our health. Exercise is one such factor that’s amazingly effective at improving health. Regular exercise for women and men provides countless mental and physical health benefits.

From improved mood and cognitive functions to decreased blood pressure and cholesterol levels – consistent exercise comes with countless benefits. That’s why exercising is something that must be encouraged in childhood and throughout our adult lives. Here are the key mental and physical health benefits of exercising for women –

Control Over Mood Swings

Tired of all the unnecessary mood swings that hamper your day-to-day responsibilities. It’s not your fault. All adult women have shifting levels of estrogen and progesterone in their bodies. They’re intended to impact women’s fertility patterns, but these hormones also impact their brain chemistries and moods.

So, during periods, dropping estrogen levels make women more susceptible to irritability, depression, anxiety attacks, etc. All this can be cured by exercising. Women experience these symptoms because, during periods, their bodies stop producing serotonin, the “feel happy” brain chemical.

Thankfully, regular exercising produces endorphins in the body. This hormone is a mood regulator that takes the place of serotonin. That’s why women who exercise regularly suffer less from hormonally triggered mood swings. Most women who work out regularly report feeling happy and relaxed after each session.

Less Dependency on Medicines

By exercising, women can substitute one natural chemical in their brains (serotonin) with endorphins. They don’t need to use antidepressants which are essentially serotonin-raising medications. Women who suffer from postmenopausal anxiety or postpartum depression can benefit a lot from regular exercise.

Prevent Bone Loss

Women are more vulnerable to bone loss-related diseases. Our bodies constantly absorb and substitute bone tissues. If you suffer from bone loss-related diseases such as osteoporosis, the body fails to keep up with old bone removal and doesn’t produce sufficient bone tissues. As a result, women become extremely prone to fractures, loss of flexibility, and loss of height with age.

The loss of estrogen causes women (who already have thinner, hollower bones than men) to pick up degenerative bone diseases like osteoporosis. Regular exercising fixes this. Women who exercise regularly in their younger years develop enough bone mass to protect themselves from such diseases later in life. Even wearing high-quality workout leggings can help women preserve their bone structures.

  • Compression leggings aren’t mere cute and comfy workout clothes. They provide core stability to our skeletal frames.
  • High-quality leggings help with blood circulation and lower the risk of blood clot formations inside our circulatory systems.
  • Leggings apply gentle pressure in all regions of the body, improving blood flow and decreasing inflammation and pain.
  • Leggings made of flexible fabrics also enable women to try out different yoga poses. Trying splits or stretches (these are exercises that are good for the body) becomes much easier when you wear elastic leggings.

Make sure you wear leggings from top brands if you really want them to promote your bone health.

Easier to Manage Weight

Weight management is typically far tougher for women than men because of factors like – the loss of estrogen-producing capabilities, faster muscle burn, decreasing bone mass, and the weight gains of pregnancy. That’s why women struggling with maintaining/losing weight should focus on establishing regular exercising schedules.

  • Exercise counters these damaging factors by enabling women to build and maintain lean muscle mass. The leaner your muscle mass, the slimmer you’ll look and feel.
  • Regular exercise burns all excess calories in the body. The fat accumulation capabilities of the body diminish with regular exercise.
  • Regular physical activity significantly improves muscle strength and boosts women’s endurance levels.

Regular exercising will put you in a positive cycle of weight management. As more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to your tissues during exercises, you’ll feel more energetic. With more energy, your cardiovascular system will work more efficiently and make you feel like working out even more!

Prevention of Serious Diseases and Health Conditions

Regular physical activity enhances our body’s ability to produce high-density lipoprotein (HDL). This chemical is also known as the “good cholesterol” as it decreases the number of insalubrious triglycerides in the body.

  • Our blood flows smoother with fewer triglycerides in the body which subsequently decreases the risk of picking up cardiovascular diseases.
  • A healthier cardiovascular system means that you’re less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and strokes.
  • Regular physical activity decreases the risk of arthritis.
  • Regular physical activity also decreases the risk of mental ailments like depression, insomnia, mood swings, anxiety.

Most importantly, exercise has an excellent track record of improving cognitive functions. The more cognitively sharp we become, the more our physical and mental health improves!
