anti aging productsOf course, being healthy and feeling great is important no matter what your age. However, as we get older it’s important to take extra steps to ensure we live life to the best. As you grow older you have more experience of life but at the same time, you may feel a sense of loss about the things you are no longer able to do or things you wish you had done. The good thing about staying healthy as you get older is learning new skills and finding new things to keep you active and engaged. The good thing about aging is that you can take preventative measures now to ensure as you get older you remain healthy and fit and that means incorporating healthy eating, exercise, reducing stress levels, and keeping your brain active.

There is an old saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. This is totally false and as you get older and have more time on your hands you can learn new things and go new places. You will be able to set out your own plans and experience things that come with knowledge and wisdom. Below are tips to help you stay healthy as you get older.

Coping with Change

As with life, as you get older you will experience times of joy in your life but there will also be times of sadness and stress. During the stressful and sad times, it is important to build up resilience so that the stress doesn’t become too much and impact upon your health. You can do this by focusing on what you are grateful for. You can start your day off by listing all the things you are grateful for as a daily affirmation.

Meaning & Joy

As you get older and come to retirement, it’s important to find meaning and joy in your life. Life changes in so many ways and you may move away from some of the things that were part of your life such as your job and work colleagues. This is the time to consider what you now wish to do and what adventures you want to go on. Write a list of all the things you never had time for and start doing them. This can be anything from a new hobby or sport, volunteering in your community, or even spending time traveling to exotic destinations. There are endless possibilities and as long as you find enjoyment in them they will be for you.

Connections

As you get older it’s important to keep your support networks in place or start new ones. If you are starting something new you can start a whole new group of friends. Ensure you stay connected with family too, this can be a simple phone call followed up by a visit. Staying in touch and making connections is also great for your mental health and ensuring you don’t feel lonely. If there are points in your life that you do feel lonely then reach out for help. There are plenty of helplines available as well as support groups. It’s ok to reach out when you need help.

Exercise

Exercise is so important at any stage of your life. Getting older is the same. You can do this on your own by going for walks but you can also join a gym or exercise class with like-minded people. It is never too late to start exercising or joining a gym or class. Indeed, a recent study in Sweden found that exercise was a key to longevity. Exercise is the key to adding years to your life as it helps you maintain a healthy heart, healthy bones, helps with your flexibility and it’s good for your mental health too! Doing a combination of both aerobic and strength exercises is important. Aerobic exercise can be walking briskly, jogging, swimming, cycling, or even dancing! Remember though to check with your doctor before you start any exercise program especially if you have any health conditions or if you are taking medication.

Eating Well

While a lot of people may need a full diet overhaul, eating well as you grow older is important. The body will reduce its metabolism and there will be a change in our particular tastes. There may also be times when the body doesn’t want food as the digestion system slows so it’s important to eat the right foods at the right time. You may wish to consider a dietary supplement such as Idebenone. Adding supplements or additional vitamins into your diet will help you maintain your level of energy and help you get over any issues you are experiencing with eating a balanced meal. It is also important to limit your intake of sugary and highly processed foods as these can make you lethargic. Instead opt for foods that are high in fiber such as vegetables, fruits, and wholemeal grains. Research has shown that eating a healthy well-balanced diet is good for longevity too and it can protect you against diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s to name but a few diseases related to age.

Sleep

Insomnia can be a problem as you get older. Healthy sleep hygiene is so important as you get older. This means ensuring you limit the time you nap during the day, taking exercise that can help you sleep well, and avoiding caffeine before bedtime is all ways to improve your sleep. Ensure your bedroom is free from clutter, that you have curtains that ensure the room is kept dark, and start a bedtime ritual such as taking a relaxing bath with lavender in it to help you calm down before bedtime.

Keeping a Sharp Mind

As well as exercising your body, it’s important to also exercise your mind.

Your mind is a muscle and should be used on a regular basis. Learning a new skill or being creative will keep your mind sharp. Keeping a sharp mind is so important as you get older as it helps prevent memory problems. Remember the more interaction you have with others and the more tasks you undertake the more you will use your mind and keep your brain active. Take time to work your brain by doing puzzles, opt for doing a new sport or activity, try cooking different meals. Doing new things is great for keeping a sharp mind so vary your routine too, go a different route when you are out walking. Read up on a new subject, research your family history, all of these things are a great way to keep the brain active.

Looking Good

Just because you are older doesn’t mean you can’t look good! Having a daily beauty routine will not only be great for your skin but it will make you feel good too. This means moisturizing your skin, wearing sunscreen when out, as well as drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. There are so many products on the market now for aging skin, find one that you like and suits your skin type. Treat yourself to products that make you look and feel good. There are also make-up products for mature skin. Go to a store and ask for advice so you are buying products that won’t clog your pores and will help your skin breathe.

Water

Drinking water is important at any age, however, as you get older it’s important to keep drinking water as it contributes to improving your overall energy levels, increasing brain function, and keeping your skin hydrated. If you are doing exercise ensure you drink more water to rehydrate yourself especially if you have been sweating.

Health Visits

Taking care of yourself is so important as you get older. This means making check-up appointments with health care professions. From the dentist, doctor, optician, or other health care professional that you need to see on a regular basis to ensure you continue to be in good health as you get older. This may also mean having tests to ensure you are fit and healthy. These are especially important as they can spot any issues before they become unmanageable.

In Conclusion

A healthy and active lifestyle as you grow older is the key to living a long and happy life. It is never too late to start and it is never too late to learn new things. You also don’t have to wait until you are older to start the journey. By using the tips above you will be giving yourself a head start into a happy and healthy old age. You can take charge now and you can make a difference in how you grow older. Take inspiration from the many older people who have found a new lease of life by learning new things or starting a new business. The above tips will not only keep you healthy but they can ensure you also have a happy life and ensure you age well by exercising, eating a healthy balanced diet, keeping your mind active, and looking good.
