Is Your Home Healthy?

homeHome is something that, even when we are conscious of the fact, we take for granted. It’s there for us, it doesn’t change (unless we want it to, of course), and it’s somewhere to feel safe. It’s seen us through milestones and special events, through good and bad, and it’s something that feels comfortable and stable.

Most of the time, this is a good thing. It means we’ve found a sanctuary, a place where we can truly be ourselves and relax, away from the trials and tribulations of the outside world. Yet sometimes, being so used to a place can mean we don’t notice when it’s not being as good to us as we might like. In other words, homes can become unhealthy, and it’s easy to miss the signs. Here are some things to look out for so that you can fix the problem and enjoy your own space once more.

Check The Air Quality

Air quality is something we’re very aware of when we’re outside. We know when it’s good and when it’s bad, and we know that being closer to a road rather than taking a walk out in the countryside will mean the air quality is worse for us. Yet did you know that air quality can be a problem inside your home too, and this is one of the biggest issues to take care of?

The air quality within your home can be affected by a variety of chemicals and particles that could come from your furniture, your textiles, and even your carpeting or the paint on your walls. High humidity levels can have a detrimental effect on indoor air quality, and so can layers of dirt and dust. For this reason, finding experienced local AC installers who can fit an HVAC unit capable of filtering the air can be essential for keeping your home healthy.

Even if you can’t tell the difference between the good air and poor quality air within your home, it’s wise to assume that fresh air is best and try to have your windows and doors open more often. Having plants in your home is also a great idea since they can purify the air. If none of these options will work for you, you can buy or hire air purifying units to use as and when you need them.

Clear Out The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but it can become very unwell very quickly without proper care and attention, and that means you and your family can become unwell too. The kitchen cupboards can, unfortunately, harbor all kinds of unpleasant bacteria and bugs, and if you never clear them out but instead stack newer food on top of and in front of older food, you’re making the problem worse.

When you buy food, only buy what you really need. In this way, not only will you save money, but it will stop you from stockpiling items that can go off or result in a vermin or insect infestation. Doing this also means that you won’t accidentally serve food that is no longer fit for human consumption.

Make sure you carry out a full kitchen clear out every three to six months to remove any old food that you might have missed, and so you can give the room a thorough deep clean. After all, no room has to be quite as clean as the kitchen in terms of keeping your family safe.

Be Prepared

Stress is a major issue, and as well as being a mental health condition by itself, it can lead to depression, anxiety, and even physical problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and headaches. When you are stressed you are less productive, more short-tempered, and you will find it hard to feel good about anything. The more you can do to de-stress yourself the better, and being prepared within your home is a great way to do this.

Homeowners and, to some extent, tenants, have a lot to deal with to keep their homes in the best condition. Any small problem can cause a lot of stress, and, since these problems usually come in the form of emergencies, they can eat into the monthly budget and take a lot of time to fix as well. The more prepared you can be, the less stressed you will be, and although no one wants to have to deal with an issue within the home, at least if you’re prepared it will be a quicker, easier thing to do.

Start by putting a little money aside each month for repairs and maintenance. This will help with any unexpected bills. You can also research the best contractors to use for various projects, or where to source brand name appliance parts so that, should you need them, you can save time and energy by going straight to the right websites or calling the right people to help you.

To improve air quality in your home, remember to replace air conditioners and furnace filters on a regular basis. If they are dirty, dust, debris, and other particles that come out of your HVAC system will get into the air in your home. This can cause respiratory problems, like allergies and illness.

Too little humidity, as well as too much humidity, can affect your home and your health.
All the effects of low humidity levels are listed here: https://polestarplumbing.com/tips-tricks/humidity-and-the-home-what-customers-should-know.
