If you find your circle of friends doesn’t include people who spur you on to embrace certain aspects of your life that are important, it may be time to expand your social circle to include people who will help and encourage you to reach your goals.
Befriend Your Doctor
The idea of explaining to your doctor that you have concerns about your sexual health because of an indiscretion with a new sexual partner and that you think you need a gonorrhea test might be intimidating. Instead of avoiding it, address it head-on and then praise yourself for being responsible.
It is always easier to work with a known problem at the onset than to wait for them to become more complicated. Obviously, while taking preventative measures is always the best idea, sometimes our reality may differ from our ideals; and there is nothing wrong with that. Life happens.
Make sure you have a doctor you feel comfortable with. One who understands your feelings about your health and whom you can confide in without feeling judged. Let’s face it, it is a little difficult to be unabashedly honest with someone who looks down their nose at you with judgy skepticism. Having a healthcare professional who you can speak with openly and honestly is essential for effective communication about your health.
Get Moving
Even if you are not engaging in traditional exercises, make sure you are getting up and moving. Move your body, pick things up and move them, etc., to make sure you are using your muscles. Like most things, you have to keep your body in tip-top shape by keeping it active.
Move the small items of furniture in your home when you vacuum. Not only are you cleaning more thoroughly by reaching areas that are usually unreachable with the vacuum cleaner, but you are using muscles and turning simple cleaning into more of a heart-pumping workout.
The benefits of exercise and being active not only reduce the likelihood of obesity and other related diseases, but it also helps to reduce stress and anxiety which fosters good mental health.
Say No to Sabotage
One of the biggest deterrents of improving your health is imposing unrealistic goals and expectations. Don’t declare that you are going to make countless changes that you can’t even begin to live up to. Instead, focus on small changes and set interim goals along your journey of meeting your end goal. If you overwhelm yourself by trying to do too much at once, it will become cumbersome and you will quickly revert to old bad habits.
Not All Calories Are Created Equally
There are many more nutritional elements to the food you consume than the caloric content. For example, a piece of candy and a piece of fruit may have the same amount of calories, but there are other values that need to be taken into consideration like vitamins and minerals. If you are counting calories, make sure to educate yourself on macronutrients because they are an important component of nutrition.
Happy and healthy go hand in hand. Make sure that as you begin your new venture into a healthier lifestyle, you don’t forget to include things that you enjoy. Besides making your journey more pleasurable, doing things you enjoy will help to foster a positive mental attitude.
