When Would You Need To Eat Pureed Food For Your Health?

eat pureed foodTo puree means cooking food with the help of a blender, sieve, food processor, or other similar appliances. You can create soups, shakes, and other kitchen concoctions by pureeing different ingredients. Also, it’s possible to use different healthy ingredients, like fruits and vegetables, to your pureed recipes.

But, you might wonder about the right time to eat pureed food for your health. Continue reading to know five of the best times when you should eat pureed recipes.

1. After a Dental or Oral Surgery

One advantage of eating pureed food is you don’t have to chew like you’re eating hard food options. Thus, it’s an excellent choice to puree the food you’re about to eat when you underwent a dental or oral surgery recently.

Perhaps, you’re now sporting braces, and the attachment procedure of these orthodontic tools might make it challenging for you to properly chew food. Pureeing the food you’re about to eat will help you swallow food correctly with lesser pain than chewing food options with new braces.

Also, specific recipes may have enhanced flavors when you puree them. For instance, pumpkin can be combined better with your saliva and digestive enzymes when pureed. Thus, pumpkin puree can be a delicious treat after oral surgery.

But, don’t treat pureed food like drinking liquids as you still need to chew it properly. Swallowing directly instead of chewing pureed recipes might compromise digestion. However, the beauty of chewing pureed dishes is that you won’t need to chew as much as when you’re eating hard food.

2. Eating or Swallowing Problems

Some individuals might have difficulties in eating or swallowing food. This concern is called dysphagia, which is the term used when a person requires more time and effort to move food or beverages from the mouth to the stomach.

Dysphagia may not be picky when choosing its victims. People in different age groups can acquire this health condition. However, this ailment can be more common in seniors than young children.

If you have these symptoms, you might have dysphagia:

  • Pain while swallowing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Frequent regurgitation
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Coughing or gagging while swallowing

Eating solid foods when you have dysphagia can be very challenging. But, pureeing food options might help you gain the nutrients from food while lessening the discomfort felt from the health condition.

As mentioned above, pureed food can be easier to swallow than solid dishes. Remember, proper nutrition is essential for everyone. Dysphagia makes it challenging for patients to gain their recommended daily nutrition intake because of the difficulty in swallowing food. Pureed recipes help mitigate this concern, so dysphagia patients can still achieve their daily nutritional requirements.

3. When You Have Canker Sores

Canker sores or mouth ulcers may develop at the base of your gums or the soft tissues in other areas of the mouth. Don’t confuse canker sores with cold sores, as the former might develop on the surface of your lips. Also, unlike cold sores, canker sores aren’t contagious.

Nonetheless, having canker sores can make talking, laughing, and eating difficult. This mouth condition can go away without medication in a week or two. But, the time when these mouth ulcers are present may make it challenging for people to chew food, especially if these ulcers develop on the surface of your tongue.

Canker sores can come from different sources, including:

  • Accidentally biting your mouth
  • Overzealous brushing
  • Diets that lack folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12
  • Emotional stress

If you eat a healthy diet, you can avoid some causes of canker sores. Make sure your meals and snacks come with healthy servings of minerals, like iron and zinc, along with vitamin B-12. If you lack these nutritional elements, then you might have a high risk of acquiring mouth ulcers.

It’s still possible to chew food properly when you have canker sores. But, it might take a while before you can swallow because you might need to eat slower than average.

If you’re the main chef of the household, consider pureeing your food to help deal with this mouth condition. But, if you don’t know how to cook specific recipes, make a request to the person in your home to puree your food instead of serving it as a solid dish.

Don’t lessen the quality of your diet because of the presence of canker sores. Eat pureed food with healthy ingredients, like vegetables, to help maintain your healthy diet despite the discomfort in your mouth.

4. Living a Fast-Paced Life

Many people live a fast-paced life. You might always be running for the clock to complete tasks at work or school before their deadlines.

When you live life in the fast lane, it might become challenging for you to stay in one place to chew when eating your food. You might consider sacrificing your health by eating fast food. But, many fast food options have offerings filled with additives and preservatives that can harm your well-being.

Instead, consider preparing pureed food at night when you arrive home. You can then reheat the food container when you’re at work or school, which shouldn’t require too much effort to chew and swallow.

Do this process daily. You can help your body gain its nutritional needs without sacrificing too much of your valuable time.

5. Reaching Your Senior Years

As you age, you might notice that it’s becoming challenging to chew and swallow food. So, pureeing dishes can help you eat your food while bypassing that difficulty.

Also, your well-being might not be as it used to be when you were a child or a young adult. As you enter your senior years, you might be more prone to illness than before. So, it would help if you considered pureeing food to help your body absorb nutrients from the food you eat instead of rejecting solid foods you find challenging to consume.

Conclusion

Now, you should know the optimal times to eat pureed food. But, don’t let this post inhibit you from enjoying pureed dishes. If you’re a fan of pureed recipes, even if you feel that you’re at the prime of your life, then, by all means, eat these food options.
