Hemp CBD Oil vs. Cannabis CBD Oil: 7 Major Differences

CBD OilCBD products are now being sold online and even in local convenience stores. The era of CBD products has arrived, and it is not going away anytime soon. With CBD’s wellness uses becoming more widely known, there is an important question you need to ask yourself when shopping for CBD products. Is there a difference between hemp oil and cannabis oil?

Most people buying CBD oil are unaware of this difference. The two final products are indistinguishable in appearance. In reality, they are two separate extracts from two different plants.  In this article, we’ll highlight the 7 major differences between hemp CBD oil and cannabis CBD oil.

1. Where and How They Are Extracted?

Hemp CBD oil is derived from hemp plants, whereas cannabis CBD oil is derived from marijuana. That’s it; that’s the main difference. Hemp and cannabis are different strains that emerge from the same plant species. The hemp plant is abundant in CBD while the cannabis plant is plentiful in THC.

Both of these oils can be found in the market today, and as said previously, there is no way to tell the difference unless the company that provides them specifies how or where they are extracted.

2. CBD Content

If you’re shopping for CBD oil, it’s presumably because you’ve heard a great deal about it and want to get in on the wellness wave. Cannabis CBD oil typically has a higher concentration of THC than in CBD. Because cannabis-derived oil is more concentrated, it might offer enhanced benefits.

On the other hand, in hemp-derived oil, the amount of CBD is generally higher, and the THC is lower. Under federal law, for a CBD product to be legal, it has to have a  concentration of under 0.3% THC.

3. THC Content

As aforementioned, hemp CBD oil contains less than 0.3% THC. Most people are turning to CBD for precisely that reason, the absence of the intoxicating effects of THC. If you are one of those individuals who feel THC should be present in the extract combined with CBD, cannabis CBD oil might be for you. In fact, when both THC and CBD are present in the oil, they work together to create what’s known as the entourage effect.

This means that each cannabinoids’ potency is enhanced when they’re present together.

4. Legalities of Hemp Oil and Cannabis Oil

Although many states have already legalized some or all forms of marijuana, things can still be confusing for newcomers when it comes to legalities. To put it simply, hemp-derived oil is federally legal; On the other hand, cannabis oil is not.

That means even though multiple states have legalized its use, the federal government still considers CBD products derived from marijuana to be illegal. Since state laws still need to be passed to match the new federal law, hemp oil is operating in a grey area, but things are moving quickly. Some states have already opted in and made hemp oil legal- 33, in fact.

5. Is Hemp Oil Reliable?

For hemp oils to be reliable, it needs to be tested by a third party. Without that test, there’s no way of telling how much CBD the extract actually contains, if there is any. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already shut down a handful of sketchy companies who sell hemp oils claiming they contained CBD when they don’t. With that being said, it’s important to keep in mind that NOT ALL CBD oil is created equal so it’s always a good idea to research trusted reviews of the best CBD oils.

6. What Are The Risks for Both Strains?

For CBD oil to be potent, the CBD extraction process must be carried out masterfully. There a few ways to extract CBD oil from the hemp or cannabis plants but each of them is subjected to pros and cons.

First, there’s the CO2 Extraction method. That method uses supercritical carbon dioxide to pull cannabinoids from cannabis plants. This method is safe and ideal if done by professionals. In addition, it yields high-quality CBD- and leave very little room for error. However, engaging in this method of extraction can be very expensive- setup costs start at approximately $40,000.

Then, we have a relatively simple ‘solvent method.’ This extraction method works by using ethanol as a solvent to remove extracts from cannabis plant trimmings. The bright side of this method is that it is inexpensive and it’s simple and can even be done at home. However, it’s dangerous because ethanol is extremely flammable.

7. Practical Uses of Hemp Derived CBD Oil

Hemp-derived oil is currently being used for wellness purposes as the compound may support a healthy regulatory system by supplying the body with an extra supply of cannabinoids. You can add it to your drink or food for a more subtle method of ingestion or go for the hemp-derived CBD edibles if that’s your style.
