Pregnancy Options for Women Who Wish to Start a Family Later in Life

post pregnancy healthBy the time a woman reaches 35, her chances of conceiving naturally and having a healthy pregnancy decrease. Though many women are aware of this, it goes without saying that not every woman is ready to start a family between the ages of 20-35. Some wish to put their career and personal goals like traveling first before settling down to raise a family. If you feel like this is a path you wish to take with your life, you may be wondering what options you have for conceiving in the future?

Thanks to modern technology and medical developments, couples are able to conceive in their mid 30’s and beyond. Though fertility rates and the ability to carry a pregnancy to term can be an issue for some, there are still solutions that would allow them to start a family. Here’s a look at some of those options:

Conceiving Naturally

Though your body naturally changes as you get older reducing the chances of conception and successful pregnancies, it’s not impossible to get pregnant the old fashioned way. This is especially true for women in the mid to late 30’s who keep themselves in really good shape healthwise. If you’d like to go this route you should schedule an appointment with your gynecologist to be tested and examined. You will also need to sustain a healthy diet to promote fertility and to sustain a healthy pregnancy. It can take up to a year or more to conceive naturally.

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF)  is a process that helps the egg and sperm to fertilize. With the use of fertility medications and surgery, the idea is to help the sperm to fertilize the egg and have the fertilized egg implant within the uterine walls. Female patients are required to take medication that helps their body to produce several eggs during their ovulation period. When the eggs have formed they are then extracted from the body and mixed with the male sperm.

If the fertilization is successful, they place the fertilized egg back into the uterus with the hopes of successful implantation. This process is done over the course of several weeks during several visits. Though not 100% guaranteed, it can increase your chances of getting pregnant. You can find fertility information on the IVF process and costs by searching the web.

Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination or IUI is another medical procedure you can consider if you’re interested in getting pregnant later in life. This process, however, is a bit different than the IVF treatments. With IUI, the female patient will still be required to take fertility drugs to increase their egg production. However, instead of removing the egg from the uterus to progress the fertilization process, the sperm is injected into the uterus for the fertilization and implantation process to take place. For women whose significant other has fertility issues or those that may choose to go with a sperm donor, this would be a more viable option.

Surrogate or Donor

Unfortunately, there aren’t any medical or scientifically proven ways to reverse the natural aging process of the body. Though you may want to become pregnant on your own, there are instances in which this simply isn’t possible. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a baby, however. You can opt to have a surrogate or donor. A surrogate would be ideal if you have good eggs but can’t carry a pregnancy to term or your eggs are not fertile. They would inseminate the surrogate with your partner’s sperm and she would carry the baby to term.  A donor, on the other hand, would be best used if your partner’s sperm isn’t fertile or you don’t have a partner. Donated sperm would then be used to fertilize your eggs to increase your chances of conceiving.

Surrogacy services for intended parents are now available through various specialized agencies and clinics that can help match you with a surrogate who meets your needs. These services typically involve thorough screenings of potential surrogates to ensure their health and suitability for pregnancy. Moreover, they often provide legal and emotional support throughout the process, helping to facilitate a smooth and secure arrangement for all parties involved.

Choosing the right surrogacy service involves several crucial factors to ensure a safe and harmonious experience. Prioritize agencies with a strong reputation and proven track record. It’s vital to confirm they offer robust legal expertise tailored to surrogacy laws, which vary significantly by location. Comprehensive support services for both surrogates and intended parents, thorough screening processes, and clear financial arrangements are key aspects to investigate.

Additionally, ensure the agency’s matching process aligns with your needs and values, and that they maintain high ethical standards, especially regarding the well-being of all parties involved. Effective communication and transparency from the agency are essential for managing the complex dynamics of surrogacy.

For international surrogacies, understanding legal implications related to citizenship and parental rights is crucial. Consultations and meetings with the agency can also offer further insights into their operation and suitability. Consulting a legal expert in reproductive rights is recommended for additional guidance.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to travel the world, try new things, and chase your career before you decide to settle down and get pregnant. Lots of women these days are taking this route and have found it to be very fulfilling. If a family is something that’s in your future plans, however, the above-mentioned solutions are some of the most common solutions used to help you conceive later in life.
