How to Spot Signs that Your Elderly Parent Needs Help

Very often, however, it can be tricky to spot early signs of ailment. And this may lead to more serious issues later down the line.

So, we’re going to explore the key indicators that your elderly parent needs help – and how best to respond to them.

They Struggle Physically

It may seem obvious, but if your parent struggles to move – in any way – they may need help. Have you noticed that they find it difficult to vacate a chair, for example?

Or do they complain of joint or muscle pain? Perhaps their knees hurt frequently? Does their grip on items seem looser than you remember?

Wherever it’s located, bodily discomfort usually indicates that something isn’t quite right.

Your mum or dad, therefore, may want to limit how often they move the inflicted joint or muscle. That way, they can avoid putting strain on it – or worsening the damage.

To help them, you could invest in a mobility scooter. Using it, they’ll be able to rest their body and perform their daily routine.

With your support, they needn’t let an ailment get in the way of their everyday lives.

They Seem to Forget More Easily

Admittedly, this usually isn’t an age-related problem. Many people forget things on a regular basis – and that’s regardless of how old they are.

But losing track of our duties could be a cause for concern. Especially for elderly people.

If you’re worried about your parents, you might want to check that they’re staying on top of their responsibilities.

Ask them whether they’re still able to make it to every appointment. And how about their bills? Are they paying them on time?

If the answer to either one or both is no, it may be time to consider outside help. Typically, the best place to go for this is your family doctor.

They will be able to provide the right advice for you, your parent and your family. In addition, there are various support services for dealing with this change in behaviour.

If you spot this sign, there’s plenty that you can do to help your parent.

Their Mood Has Dropped

Most people suffer from low mood at some point in their lives. As with anyone, a prolonged semblance of depression shouldn’t be ignored.

Our emotional health can influence our physical wellbeing hugely. And so, it’s worth maintaining it.

Whether great or small, any emotional shifts or episodes may suggest a change in mental functioning.

Once again, a visit to your doctor could enable you both to respond to this immediately. Through this, you’ll be able to help them receive the support that they need.

Nobody wants to be babied – and this is particularly true of parents. And so, it’s important to ensure that you enable your mum or dad to live as independently as possible.

That way, they may be able to live their lives to the full for longer.
