Important Factors to Consider When You’re Choosing Medical Alert Systems with GPS

Medical Alert SystemsAre you wondering which medical alert system with GPS functionality to buy for yourself or someone dear to you? With so many options, it can be a difficult choice to make. There are certain things you should look out for in this type of product. Below are the most important factors you need to consider when you are choosing a medical alert system with GPS.

The Level of Monitoring Required

Medical alert systems with GPS are mostly designed to be used on the go. However, they’re intended to be used at home too. Make sure you find out exactly what kind of monitoring is required by the individual who will use this device, including where they plan to use it. Some medical alert systems for seniors provide a wider range of at-home coverage than others. An apartment dweller may only need about 600 feet of coverage at home, whereas a person who lives in a large house with a yard might need a range of 1,200 feet.

Personal Preferences of the Person Using the Device

Each person has their own preferences, and they will find certain monitors easier to use than others. For example, they may prefer to wear their medical alert device on their wrist or as a necklace-like pendant. They can also choose systems that work with wall-mounted help buttons. Some companies invest more in the aesthetic design of their wearables to make them more attractive. Also, think about whether the user will want to use the device when they are taking a shower. If so, make sure you select a model that provides waterproof personal alarm buttons.

The Cellular Connection in Your Area

Medical alert systems with GPS operate using your local cellular network. You don’t need to own a cell phone or pay for a cell plan; the use of a mobile network will be included in the cost of your medical alert service. Make sure that any medical alert system you’re considering works using the cellular network in your area. Most systems operate on either AT&T or the T-Mobile wireless networks. You can find out what networks cover your area by visiting their websites.

Advanced Features

Medical Alert Systems with GPS functionality are becoming more sophisticated. For instance, many of the latest monitors use wearable technologies that make them easier to use than previous models. When a device has fall-detection technology built in, the person wearing it can get help even if they fall unconscious or are otherwise unable to press their personal alarm button. Built-in motion sensors detect the fall and automatically contact the medical alert company’s monitoring center.

The Price of the Monitor

Most medical alert systems include the essential equipment for free when you sign up for their service, but you’ll pay a monthly, semi-annual or yearly charge for the monitoring service and any optional extras you choose. Most medical alert systems cost about $1 to $1.50 per day, which is about $30 to $45 per month. Keep in mind that extra features and add-ons can increase that cost.

All-in-one vs. Two-piece GPS Systems

Some GPS medical alert systems require you to keep two components on you at all times: (1) The wearable alarm button pendant or wristband, and (2) a portable, two-way speaker base station that is used to communicate with the medical alert care center. The mobile base station is usually about the size of a deck of cards and is carried in a pocket, purse or clipped to your waistband.

All-in-one models, on the other hand, give you the convenience of having the two-way speaker built into the wearable device itself, which usually comes in the form of a pendant. You press the alarm button and talk to a care agent with the same wearable pendant; there’s no need to carry a separate base station for communication purposes with an all-in-one device.

Battery Life

If you’re away from home a lot and don’t want to have to charge your mobile GPS device frequently, look for one that has the longest battery life, which is about 36 hours between charges. Others may need to be charged every 24 hours or less. Each company should let you know what kind of battery life you can expect from their GPS medical alert device.

When you decide to invest in a medical alert system with GPS, it’s crucial to know what your options are and carry out the proper research. When you follow the tips above, it will become much easier to find the right solution for your peace of mind.
