Being Latina myself, I am fully aware of how minority populations suffer from lack of information and resources when it comes to healthcare. From poor choices at their local markets to overcrowded local clinics, it can be tough for lower income communities to get the information and care they need to lead healthier lives.
But thanks to the Aetna Foundation Digital Health Initiative for vulnerable and minority populations, these underserved communities are now able to get the information and help they need with the click of a mouse! This initiative will support the implementation and evaluation of technology innovations to help address public health concerns. In fact, with more than $1.2 million in grants to support the use of digital health technology, these grants are part of a larger $4 million, three-year digital health commitment from the Aetna Foundation to continue the implementation of easier, more efficient mediums to help increase awareness among these lower income communities and help overall public health.
From apps that track workouts or calorie intake to being able to email physicians directly, the digital world is helping everyone play a more active role in their own healthcare. Gone are the days of having to make appointments and wait hours before being able to express concerns or ask questions in person. With the advent and continued popularity (and necessity) of smartphones, it’s helping everyone, including the underserved minority population, access to information and assistance like never before.
Seeing how the minority communities suffer from lack of healthy options in their grocery stores, community recreation and access to doctors and other preventive health practitioners, the increasing use of technology in the healthcare field is an absolute benefit to everyone. From a K-12 digital health curriculum to help arm the younger generation with this important information to targeting niche communities in ways that suit them to offer preventive health information, we are all getting closer to a healthier world!
