hawaii discount car rentalVacation time is all about comfort and indulgence, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make healthy eating choices as you travel to exotic destinations. The Hawaiian Islands have long been known for their fresh and alluring cuisine compiled from the eclectic population. People worldwide have brought their own food styles to the islands over the decades that have morphed into traditional Hawaiian food.

If you visit Hawaii, you will want to try some local cuisine favorites. The island’s people pride themselves on their self-sufficiency and using all resources to fill their tables. From fresh fish and locally grown vegetables to unique herbs and spices, Hawaiian cuisine has something that will please any palette.

Island natives will welcome you with Hawaiian leis and culinary treats that will give you a taste of the flavor of the Pacific cultures. Let’s take a closer look at a few healthy dishes you must try on your Hawaiian vacation.

Haupia

If you are visiting Hawaii on vacation, you must treat yourself to some traditional local desserts, including Haupia. This rich and creamy treat is made from local coconut milk, cornstarch, and sugar. Once the combination sets, it is cut into pieces and served with shaved coconut or fresh berries. Haupia is available almost everywhere in Hawaii and is one of the favorite local desserts.

Taro Chips

If you are looking for more of a snack rather than a meal while on your vacation, you have to try the crunchy and craveable Taro Chips. Taro is a native vegetable that is a staple in the local diet. Taro chips are dried and baked thin slices of this nutritious vegetable that make a light and healthy snack. Flavored with floured garlic and sea salt, these thin crisps are the perfect munchie nibbler.

Hawaiian Fruits

The lush gardens and jungles of the Hawaiian islands are the nesting grounds for some of the world’s most delicious and unique fruits. There are four farming seasons that determine what type of fruits will be available fresh from the vines. You can try a variety of delicious native fruits in a cocktail, salad, or ripe from the orchard. Enjoy such singularly devine treats like starfruit, dragon fruit, and mangosteens.

Poi

When you are visiting Hawaii, you should definitely try poi when you have the chance. The taro roots that are used to make this traditional dish have a slimy texture that may take a little getting used to if you are not used to starchy vegetables. As far as health is concerned, it is generally considered to be quite healthy despite it having a mild flavor and a nutty aftertaste. It’s great for getting your daily fiber and can be served cold or warm.

Mochi

Many Asian countries love Mochi, a sweet rice cake. Most local restaurants and stores serve mochi, one of Hawaii’s most popular foods. You can make mochi with chocolate, strawberry, or peanut butter. It’s usually served with ice cream or honey drizzled on top. Usually, mochi is eaten as a dessert, but there are many different ways to enjoy it.

There is more to enjoy in Hawaii beyond the sandy beaches and surfable waves. If you are interested in exploring the islands’ culture, start with some of these healthy Hawaiian foods.
