Think of the capital of Texas and probably one thing that springs to mind is: Houston, we have a problem.

But, did you know that there’s so much more to this sprawling metropolis than this infamous line? Houston, although closely linked to the Space Center, is a city bursting with a rich history, overflowing with culture, theatres, restaurants and iconic dishes – so it’s easy to see why millions of visitors flock here every single year. If you’re planning a trip to Houston, it’s always worth conducting a little research so you can make the most of your visit and know what to expect!

Here we’ll take a look at what all visitors should expect when visiting Houston, Texas.

There’s a lot of traffic

According to the most recent census data, there are around 1.3 million vehicles in Houston. Which means visitors can expect to see a lot of traffic on the roads. This also means that congestion, long queues and even accidents are more likely – click here for more information about car accident cases in Houston. So, if you’re planning on driving through this incredible city, you’ll find that the roads a little quieter between 9am-3pm. Alternatively, get yourself some good walking shoes and discover the city on foot!

Dress for all weathers

From high humidity and endless sunshine to heavy rain and even storms! Houston experiences weather from all four seasons, often all within the same day. So, when you’re visiting this exciting city, make sure you’re dressed correctly. An umbrella you can carry in your handbag and a light jacket for those sudden downpours as well as sunscreen and light tops under your coat! Always check the weather forecast before you leave the hotel!

Food is one of a kind

Often imitated but never duplicated, Houston is renowned for it’s rich, hearty food scene that’s bursting with everything you’d expect from a Southern state. From BBQ to Vietnamese and Cajun influence, Tex-Mex dishes, potato salads and casseroles and all in gigantic portions and more…are you hungry yet?

Hospitality is everything

Make sure you remember your pleases and thank yous when visiting Houston. Politeness and kind courtesy mean a great deal here, and remembering your manners will ensure you have a much more pleasant experience. If you’re from a much more reserved city or state, then a stranger wishing you Good Morning, might take you aback. Just go with it!

Culture and diversity are everywhere

From hipsters and high city slickers to cowboys and people from all over the world. You’ll find an incredibly diverse range of people in Houston, making everything from art to the food and even the architecture mesmerising. Try to explore as much as you can!

Research

Whether you want to visit the Space Center or you want to visit your very first rodeo, research times and availability before you commit. There’s so much to see and do in Houston, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
