First HomeThere is no feeling quite like buying your first home and this will be a place to you make many happy memories. It is a real thrill to get the keys and to move in, but it can also be a daunting time because it is a big responsibility and you will no longer have a landlord to call to fix any problems that you might have.

There are a few handy tips worth knowing when you buy your first home or move somewhere new which should help to reduce stress while also ensuring that you can keep a happy home.

Buy A Good Toolkit

There will always be something that needs doing around the home and you will need a good set of tools to carry out this work yourself. You certainly won’t want to rush out and buy a toolkit when you need one, so having one available from when you move in is a smart move.

Meet The Neighbors

It is a good idea to introduce yourself to the neighbors sooner rather than later and this can bring a handful of advantages, as well as make things less awkward. You might find that they have items that you can borrow, they might show you around the area or give you a few tips, amongst other benefits.

Find The Stopcock & Fuse Box

Every homeowner needs to know where the stopcock and fuse box are located in case of an emergency – you certainly won’t want to be trying to find them during a leak or a blackout! This will help you to react quickly in the event of an emergency and stop any damage from occurring.

Have Local Numbers

Similarly, it is helpful to have the number for local services so that you do not waste time trying to find them in the event of an emergency. This should include the phone number for a screen repair service so that you can get a window repaired within 24 hours so that security is not an issue.

Invest In Home Security

Leading on from this, it is also a good idea to invest in home security so that you can feel safe and protected when at home. There are many excellent home security products to consider, such as:

  • Video doorbells
  • CCTV cameras
  • Intruder alarms
  • Motion-activated lighting
  • Smart locks

One Job At A Time

When you move into a new home, you will be desperate to get it looking how you want and to start all kinds of projects. It is much better to tackle one job at a time, such as decorating the lounge so that the rest of the house remains livable, to reduce stress and to ensure that everything gets done. Home decorating and DIY can be a stressful, chaotic and time-consuming process, so you are best breaking it down into smaller, achievable sections.

Moving into your first home is incredibly exciting but it is also very different from renting as it will be up to you to look after the home. These tips should help you to settle quickly and help to turn the house into a home.

I see you’re suggesting getting the number for local services in advance – that’s great! Some issues need to be fixed urgently, indeed. Especially when it comes to plumbing issues – they have severe consequences if not fixed promptly: https://polestarplumbing.com/news-media/the-most-frightening-household-plumbing-disasters. Faulty plumbing is the biggest threat to your property.

These are great tips, you’re right, it’s never too late to invest a little in the security of your home and your family. I recently bought a new house in Ikoyi and also immediately made sure that it was safe.
In general, investing in real estate is difficult, but it is a very good investment
