Three Ways to Improve the Value of Your House

home value

No matter how much you love your home, when the time comes to move on and sell up, it can be baffling when it isn’t snapped up immediately by droves of keen buyers. Sometimes nostalgia and fondness can cloud people’s judgement, especially when they’ve worked hard to decorate their home. Even if you aren’t planning to move anytime soon, there’s no harm in taking a look at these handy tips which will help you add value to your home, either for yourself or future buyers. Be sure to check out the Home Remodeling and Renovation Guide for further inspiration.

One: Light and Space

Traditional styles can sometimes be appealing for their strong, individual aesthetics rather than their inherent quality. For example, heavily patterned wallpaper by a famous artist is beautiful for the sake of art but does not necessarily make a room more inviting or attractive. Whether you have small, cozy rooms or wide-open spaces, it’s important to decorate your home around its bare bones. Larger windows and open plan rooms allow for more flexibility, as their structure alone is enough to provide ample light and space. However, even smaller rooms can seem spacious with clever use of wall color, texture and mirrors. People value space and making a room appear bigger is a great way to improve your home’s value. Simply decorate in bright, clean colors to reflect as much natural light as possible, while strategically placing mirrors will give the illusion of extra space.

Two: Intrigue and Surprise

As children, most people enjoyed games with hiding and treasure hunting. A little piece of that tends to live on in most adults, so when improving the value of your home, you might consider creating small, unexpected elements that catch visitors off guard. For example, an ordinary home with a stunning garden could just be the factor that boosts your home to the next level. Why not think about creating a beautiful pond with Water Garden or planting some unusual trees? Finding a hidden gem at the back of the house is a great way to leave a lasting impression on any visitor.

Three: Potential

It’s certainly not uncommon for people to want to leave a mark. Making your home special is about tailoring it to your personal taste. However, having this legacy of your strong opinions in your house could put off potential buyers in the future. While some people love the opportunity to invest in a building and renovate it themselves, not everyone has the time or budget to do so. That’s why it’s so important that you consider how difficult your design choices could be to reverse or undo later on. There’s nothing wrong with having a strong personal style, but if you want to add value to your home, you’d be wise to keep your décor as flexible as possible. Buyers like to see themselves in prospective houses, and the right interior design can help them imagine it clearer. Save your wild decorating for furniture, upholstery and artwork – leave your wall coverings and essential fixtures simple, so your home’s value is always ready to improve.
