Is Tap Water Good Enough To Wash My Fruit And Vegetables?

washing fruit and vegetablesDo you currently wash your vegetable straight from the tap or do you spend a small fortune purchasing bottled water to make sure you and your family are safe? Maybe you haven’t even thought about it before today, but do you know how clean the water is that comes out of your tap? Is it safe to drink?

The water company spends billions every year treating the water to ensure t is clean when it leaves the treatment plant. Unfortunately it still needs to travel down miles of pipe work before it gets to your tap and it can pick up particles and even bacteria on its journey.

For the most part this is not an issue. However, for peace of mind it is advisable to invest in a whole house filter.

Washing Your Fruit and Vegetables

You may wonder why you even need to wash your fruit and vegetables. The easiest answer to this is concerning how they are grown and the products that are used to help them grow. Fertilizers, cow manure and other substances designed to make the crops grow better can also have diseases in them. It is possible, although rare for these diseases to attach themselves to your fruits and vegetables. If you don’t wash them it is possible you will consume these bacteria and become sick.

Should You Use The Tap Water

It is possible to use tap water and should be safe. After all, the water has been treated before it comes to your house. Unfortunately, the chemicals used to treat your water supply, particularly chlorine, have been linked with health issues themselves!

It is, therefore advisable to have a filter installed in your home. You can choose from a wide range of filters. There are those that soften water, those which remove the salt from softened water and those which provide you with clean water. Most of the filters designed to provide clean water to your home use a solid piece of carbon. As the water flows through it small particles and all bacteria are removed.

This water can then be used to safely clean your vegetables and fruit; allowing you to enjoy their flavor without any health risks.

Tap water should be safe but to be certain it is best to invest in a water filter.

It is possible to add a water filter into the water supply before a specific tap or even to fit a dedicated clean water tap. However, you may prefer to choose the whole house option. This will provide you with peace of mind whether you are in the bath room cleaning your teeth or in the kitchen washing your fruit.

Of course this does not change the fact that you need to follow proper convention before washing any fruit or vegetables. You should always wash your own hands first, make sure your work surfaces and knives are clean and always soak for several minutes and product with lots of awkward places to reach.
