green Home improvement

Sometimes we look around at our home and think, “How on earth did it get so cluttered?” or “Why does everything look so drab?” If you are struggling with the appearance of your living space, it’s time to take back your home and make it what you desire. Whether you are just in need of de-cluttering or re-decorating, we have a few tips that can help you have the home you truly want to reside in.

Work On A Room One At A Time

Re-decorating or de-cluttering can be a time consuming and overwhelming experience. Your best bet is to tackle a single room at a time. Focusing on each room allows you to bring out see the potential and achieve your signature look. If you start in the living room, first decide what you absolutely cannot part with. Grandma’s china cabinet should probably stick around but that recliner you found on the side of the road might best be given away or carted off. With furniture lines like Marge Carson Furniture, you can find the right pieces to bring new life to your room.

Freshen Up With New Paint

Keeping your home in peak shape is every homeowner’s desire and sometimes all you need is a change in color. It’s amazing how a little fresh paint on the walls, or a new color, can change the aesthetic of the room you are working on. Paint comes in a wide variety of shades and easily compliment your furniture. If you can, take a swatch of your upholstery to the nearest paint shop and compare color cards with the fabric.

Parting With Your Things

For some people, decluttering is a hard task to take on. Some things have sentimental value even though we don’t actively use them on a regular basis. Others we hang on to because we assume we may use that item later on. When you prepare to declutter, always handle a room one at a time. If you think about all of the rooms you will overwhelm yourself and end up not getting much done. As you tackle a room, here are a few guidelines to consider:

·  Get rid of duplicates

·  Get rid of anything you have not used in a year

·  Put things in their proper place

·  Get rid of anything you wouldn’t buy now

Anything you plan to get rid of should be sold, donated, given away, or throw out if damaged. If you are a crafty person, consider upcycling your items into something you will use now.

Add Some Greenery And Life

Rooms that your visitors will be a part of should have some greenery to them. They bring about a sense of comfort and ease to you and your guests. Some plants are easy to care for and offer a natural way to purify the air. Some suggestions include:

·  Garden mum (they also add a lovely splash of color to your room)

·  Spider plant

·  Dracaena

·  Ficus or Weeping Fig

·  Peace Lily

·  Boston Fern

·  Snake Plant

·  Bamboo Palm

·  Aloe Vera

All of the above suggestions are very hard to kill so even someone who has never cared for a plant can easily care for them. It’s best to research lighting needs for each plant since they vary from full sunlight to shady. Some also grow very tall, such as the Bamboo Palm, so be sure you have plenty of space for your new plant.

Freshening up your home with new décor or de-cluttering makes your home as cozy as when you first settled in. You will want to come home and relax in your space. Many folks report that when their home is cluttered and feeling “not-so-fresh” that their mood tends to match. For your own mental health, freshening up your home is a fantastic idea to replenish how you feel about your space and yourself.
