How to Successfully Detox from Drugs

detox drugsWhen it’s done correctly and safely, detoxing doesn’t have to be a miserable experience.  Although eliminating toxins from your body isn’t exactly a pleasant thing to go through, it is a necessary step and the start of your journey to recovery.  In this article, we’re going to provide some tips and advice that will help you on the road to success.

Enroll in a Facility

Where possible, it is best to enroll in an inpatient facility, such as this Atlanta detox facility.  This will ensure you have 24/7 care and have the stability around you to make the required change.  After all, if you found out you were suffering from diabetes or heart disease, you would seek the help of a professional.  Drug abuse is a disorder, and it’s one that you will need professional help to recover from.  Clinical research also suggests that those who get clean in an in-patient facility have the best chances of long term success.

Be Willing to Take Medication

One of the hardest parts of detoxing from drugs is dealing with the withdrawal symptoms.  This can be tough, but there is medication available that can help to make this easier.  Don’t be afraid to take this.  Symptoms like chills, nausea, vomiting, shakes, anxiety, sweats and muscle cramps can all be alleviated through medication.  The symptoms are just a sign of your body ridding itself of toxins, but it can still be an unpleasant experience.

Get Support from Loved Ones

Detoxing is a hard journey, but it is one that can be made a lot easier when you have the support of your loved ones.  Getting your spouse or other family members involved in your recovery can give you something to aim for and increase your motivation to get better.  Families can enroll in therapy with you, and also take education classes on drug counseling.  All of these things can help not only you but them as well.  It will also help to teach them what to do and what not to do once you are released from the facility.

Take Care of Yourself Mentally

As your body detoxes, your mind will begin to wake up, and it can be quite hard to deal with the mental and emotional trauma.  This is why it is vital to look after your body and your mind.  Look into taking up a hobby that can keep your mind off the detox.  Some people enjoy yoga, while others take up painting.  Anything that will keep your body and mind busy will work.  Seeking spiritual support either through an organized religion or a 12-step program can also be useful.

It’s important to remember that the detox won’t last forever and you will get through this difficult period of your life.  Start to think about what you want to do once you leave the rehab facility and what aspirations you have for your life.  You have a whole lifetime ahead of you to rekindle dreams and lost ambitions, so go for it.  You can do it!
