We cut our own tree from a local farm. After the season we get it chipped for parks and trails.

We use energy saving lights, do not leave them on all night either despite how pretty they look!, i have containers full of gift bags that get recycled over and over(even tissue if i can), kids make creative gifts with bottles and such and little craft helpers from the dollar store( have made shake em up snow globes etc.), make gift cards from old card fronts, use the trimmed branches from our tree each year to make more usable center pieces and hangings for the doors. I do not send many cards through the mail either instead i send e-cards online to people. I also participate in cookie swaps so less cooking and waste for me and yet i get lots of delicious treats in return!

Buy Organic and Local Foods for the Holiday Feast. Not only does it taste better, but I will be doing my part for the planet too. Other than that recyling wrapping papers for gifts and buying energy saving holiday lights.

Make your own decorations….. We make wreaths and I always make table decorations for my dining room table with berries, pinecones, and different plants from outside. It is pretty and free and decomposes naturally. I am not a fan of plastic, so this takes care of that. My daughter has her own home this year and she is doing the same thing now for Christmas.

We like to make our own wrapping paper–cut festive potato stamps and use them on kraft paper or inside-out paper grocery bags. It’s fun for kids and it gives your wrapping a unique, rustic look.

The most used “green” tip that we always do is to reuse gift bags and undamaged wrapping paper from the year before. It saves us alot of money and it is alot less waste. We have also used Newspaper comics in the past for childrens gifts. They usually love to look at the comics once they open their gift too 🙂

A great holiday green tip is to use a power strip for all the lights you have hanging up outside, and inside your home. Once you are done with them just hit the switch and presto energy won’t be wasted and you don’t have to keep putting cords in back and forth.

My holiday green tip – at long last! – is to send e-greetings vs. paper ones. It took me a while to accept this as OK, but I recently had to sort through hundreds of saved cards from over the years… and discard them! What a colossal waste indeed.

  45. Linhy says:
    December 7, 2010 at 8:41 pm

My favorite green tip is to make tree ornaments from reusable materials like pieces of cloth, broken parts of toys. I just glue them to a styrofoam ball and hang on the tree. My little ones enjoy making them and each year we have new ornaments to add to the tree!

Several years ago I made cloth gift bags with drawstring tops on them for us to ‘wrap’ our Christmas presents in. They are in festive fabrics & are a great way to limit the amount of paper that gets wasted each year. If enough people did this we could save a tree or two!

A holiday green tip I like is to make and use (and re-use forever!) fabric gift bags. They last much longer than regular gift bags, and they feel even more festive to me, maybe because of the extra care and love that was put into them when they were made. 🙂
