Seven Tips For Breastfeeding While You Are Out With Your Baby

Life with a baby can be pretty challenging. New moms have to constantly run around the clock to cater to their babies’ needs and fulfill their other commitments. The busy schedule of the mothers makes them feel physically and emotionally drained. Stepping out of the house and inhaling fresh air is the best remedy to wash off stress and tiredness.

New mothers, especially those who exclusively breastfeed their babies, are often reluctant to leave their homes’ comfort and step outside to relax themselves.

Nursing outside the home can be pretty uncomfortable for new mothers. They get anxious about their skin showing, and the unwanted gazes from the passerby add more to their anxiety and discomfort.

Staying at your home to breastfeed your newborn shouldn’t hold you back from having fun and introducing your baby to the outside environment.

In today’s article, we have shared some breastfeeding tips for new moms which will help them comfortably feed their baby when they are in public without compromising on newborn baby’s care.

Seven Tips for Breastfeeding While You Are Out With Your Baby

1. Practice in Front of a Mirror

Anxiety is sure to creep when you have to feed the baby in public. To feed your baby correctly in public, practice at home. Breastfeed your baby in front of a mirror. This is the most helpful beginner breastfeeding tip. It will give you an idea of how much of your skin is showing. You will be relieved to find out that your baby’s head would cover a major portion of your skin. If you want more privacy and comfort, you can use a nursing sheet to cover up.

Moreover, before you head out to malls or parks, try breastfeeding your baby either in less crowded areas, for example, in restaurants, café, or supportive environments such as your friends’ or relatives’ place. It will help you get easy and catch the hold of feeding the baby when you aren’t home.

2. Choose the Right Clothes

You may be tempted to wear your figure-hugging cocktail dress to dine in the restaurant, but it would be a fiasco to breastfeed your baby in it.

When you are heading out with the baby, do not just think about his clothes; think about yours too. This is the most important beginner breastfeeding tip. Your clothes should make it easy for you to breastfeed the baby, rather than figuring out how to make the breast accessible for your hungry baby.

You can easily get your hands on clothes that are exclusively designed for nursing-mother. The best thing about these clothes is the hidden openings that make it easier for them to feed the babies without showing much skin.

A loose t-shirt will also work well. You will have to lift your t-shirt for breastfeeding your baby. Similarly, a loose button-up shirt will also become your best friend when you have to feed the baby outside. You can unbutton a few buttons from the bottom to nurse your baby.

If you are worried about showing your postpartum tummy, wear a belly band underneath the shirt or a t-shirt to cover your skin.

And mamas, do not forget to invest in proper brassieres to make breastfeeding easy. The majority of the women prefer sports-brassieres as they are pretty stretchy. You won’t be needing to unfasten its clasps or undo any snaps. All that you have to do is to pull them down and feed your baby.

3. Look For Feeding-Friendly Locations

If you plan to hang out with your friends or go on a date with your partner, select the venue that provides nursing rooms or comfortable spaces for mothers for breastfeeding. You can easily breastfeed your baby privately without having to worry about unwanted stares.

Many places such as shopping malls, departmental stores, and baby shops provide nursing rooms. Those rooms are pretty clean and have a comfortable chair and a changing table.

Many restaurants are pretty welcoming for nursing mothers. You can enjoy a romantic evening with your other half without having to worry about feeding your little one.

4. Turn Away to Latch

Most skin is exposed when the baby is trying to latch. The simple solution to avoid this problem is to turn away from your actual position before you latch your baby on.

For instance, if you are sitting in a café and there are people around you, turn towards the wall to pull up your shirt. Latch your baby in this position and revert to your previous position. Once your baby has finished his mealtime, you can again face the wall to unlatch your baby and pull down your shirt.

5. Consider a Breastfeeding Cover

If you are new to breastfeeding and feel anxious to breastfeed your baby in public, cover yourself and baby while breastfeeding.

There are myriad nursing sheets, blankets, and covers available in the market and online to help nursing mothers cover their skin and babies. However, make sure that you practice feeding your baby while using a nursing cover so that your little one doesn’t feel irritated or uncomfortable when you use it outside. If you use the cover outside without practicing at home, the chances are that your little munchkin will pull away the cover or get cranky.

If your baby doesn’t like to feel covered up in a sheet or a blanket, then be a smart mama, and use a broad-brimmed sun hat. Make your baby wear the hat while he nurses; it’ll cover up a significant portion of your exposed skin.

Instead of a nursing cover, you can also use your jacket, cardigan, or even your stoles and scarves to cover up yourself.

6. Understand Your Rights

The majority of the world’s countries legally allow nursing mothers to nurse their babies in a place that is open to the general public. If a woman is denied or objected to breastfeeding her baby in public places, she can even lodge a legal complaint.

Log on to the internet to learn about breastfeeding rules and regulations and the public laws regarding it. You can find ample information on government and public health websites of your country of domicile.

Therefore, do not hesitate to nurse your baby. You are doing nothing wrong, illegal, or even unethical. Use your right and breastfeed your baby wherever you want in a public place.

If a person feels uncomfortable and asks you to move to a different place, remind him of your legal rights and mention that you can even press charges if somebody tries to rob you of your legal right. The same rule applies to the places that deny you to breastfeed your baby in public. You can file an official complaint on the ground of discrimination.

By reminding the people of your rights and the consequences of denying a woman to feed in public, they will never stare at you or request you to move.

7. Smile and Respond Confidently

It is usual for mothers to receive all kinds of glances while they are breastfeeding their babies. Some people cast friendly and admiring glances, which cheers up the mother. However, a few people frown and cast disgusted looks towards a nursing mother, making her feel like committing a crime.

Dear mamas, there is no need to hesitate or feel bad about feeding your babies in public. Just like every human being, your babies need food to satiate their hunger. Next time if you catch someone looking at you, make firm eye contact, and show your brightest smile to them. Let others know that you take immense pleasure in nourishing your baby.

If the matter isn’t solved by smiling, use your voice and respond to the people bothered by your baby having a mealtime. What is the worst thing that can happen in public? A security guard, the waiter might ask you to leave the place and go to the ladies’ room to breastfeed your baby, right?

Do not get up!

You have the right granted by the law of the state to nurse your baby anywhere in public. Remind them of your rights and politely turn down their undue orders to go to the restroom. Reply that your baby doesn’t like having his lunch in the washroom.

However, if you feel uncomfortable, you can always leave the place. You can later complain to the upper management of the mall or restaurant, which stopped you from nursing your baby.

Bonus Tips

  • Prepare a Bag

Before you leave your house, even if it is just for a few minutes, always carry the bag with essential items for you and the baby. Keep wet wipes to clean the baby’s mouth after he is finished feeding. Also, keep extra burp cloths to prevent your or your baby’s clothes from getting messy.

Keep a water bottle to hydrate yourself on the go so that you don’t feel lethargic after breastfeeding your baby.

  • Use Slings

You can easily breastfeed your baby in the carrier or a sling. The baby is close to the breast, and he can easily latch on. Moreover, the fabric of the sling or a wrap will cover up your skin. The most significant advantage of these slings is that it allows you to feed the baby when you are walking, or in a moving bus.

Practice feeding your baby in a sling at home to become a pro at it.

Conclusion

Breastfeeding your baby is excellent. Everything your baby needs to satiate his hunger is readily available.

Mothers feel wonderful to feed their babies and nourish them physically and mentally. However, nervousness and discomfort rob them of this beautiful feeling when they have to breastfeed the child in public. But not anymore!

The above breastfeeding tips for new moms will help you to feed your baby confidently while you are outside the comfort of your home. After all, newborn baby care is a priority.
