I adore being a tourist in my own city! An afternoon at a place that I’ve never been really feels like a mini-getaway. I love finding new little pockets filled with fun shopping and dining and most of all, cultural locations.
Here in Los Angeles, we are fortunate to have many museums and neat sites to check out and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is just one of those places. Oddly enough, in my 17 years of living here, I’ve never been to the NHM! So it was a great treat to visit them and see what fun stuff they had in store for me.
First of all, it’s a beautiful building as it’s very reminiscent of a Manhattan or Washington D.C. museum. Filled with elaborate and well thought out exhibits, it’s a perfect place for families with kids as well as just a fun date.
And my favorite attraction, by far, was the Nature Gardens and Nature Labs. Visitors are able to explore nature on their own as well as hang out with the museums educators, who can highlight the Nature Gardens’ hidden secrets. Every bush, flower, and tree seen in the gardens have been planted to attract wildlife. From butterflies, hummingbirds, squirrels, and a lot more, it’s a wonderful way to learn about how we affect our environment and how nature and the environment affects us.
Guests can walk the gardens and check out the pond, salivate in the edible garden (my personal favorite), dig in the dirt during one of their gardening classes or just observe the wonders of nature in the pollinator garden. Stop by the Nature Lab to learn about local plants, vegetation and wildlife and why they are so important to the region and our environment.
So whether you are a local or in from out of town, be sure to put the NHM and Nature Gardens on your sightseeing list. It really is a great way to spend an afternoon, learning about our wonderful world and enjoying the fabulous Southern California sunshine!
Feel free to visit the museum’s website as well as following them on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on upcoming events and view great photos and articles!
We’d love to hear about your favorite Staycation Destinations too! Where do you like to spend an afternoon in your hometown?
