How to plan a well-rounded family ski holiday

Ski holidays are a fantastic way to spend quality time with the family, but there’s so much more to a snowy getaway than just hitting the slopes.

Whether you’re a seasoned skier or more into sipping hot chocolate by the fire, ski resorts offer a wide range of activities that cater to all ages and interests.

Below, we explore how you can plan a well-rounded winter holiday for the whole family.

Explore on-mountain alternatives

Not everyone in the family may be keen on skiing or snowboarding, and that’s perfectly okay!

Many ski resorts offer a variety of winter activities that are just as thrilling. For instance, you could get your adrenaline pumping by tobogganing or snow tubing.

If you want a gentler activity, snowshoeing is a brilliant way to explore quieter parts of the mountains.

It’s essentially walking with special shoes that keep you from sinking into deep snow, letting you wander through beautiful snowy forests and take in some stunning winter views.

Make the most of your downtime

When the lifts stop running, the fun doesn’t have to end. Do some research into family-friendly après-ski events at your chosen resort, such as ice skating.

If you need some rest, simply relax in the comfort of your accommodation. You can enjoy a warm drink by the fire, read a good book or play board games together.

You could also organise a movie night and stock up on snacks like popcorn, crisps and sweets.

Explore your surroundings

One way to make the most of ski holidays is to venture beyond the slopes and discover the local towns and villages nearby.

Take France, for example. If you’re skiing in the Alps, there are plenty of towns with quaint streets, cosy cafés, craft shops and bustling markets.

As you enjoy a stroll, stop to enjoy a warm croissant or traditional tartiflette (a cheesy potato dish that’s a real treat after a day in the snow).

Or, if you’re visiting Switzerland, head to Zermatt to see its charming wooden chalets and enjoy stunning views of the Matterhorn.

Plan for each member of the family

Every family member will have different needs and preferences. When you’re planning ski holidays, consider the abilities and interests of each person.

For instance, if you’re travelling with young children, choose a resort with plenty of kid-friendly activities and beginner slopes.

Or, if your kids are older, you may prefer a ski resort with more challenging runs and a vibrant apres-ski scene.

Considering each person will help you ensure that everyone has an enjoyable experience.

By following these tips, you can plan an action-packed family holiday and create lasting memories together. So, pack your skis and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!
