How to Choose Your Yoga Equipment & Mat

yoga matThe list of yoga equipment and mats available on the market is endless, from cushions, mat bags, clothes, blocks, and mats. Even with such information, there are multiple choices under each category. You must consider specific characteristics and qualities such as grip, feel, thickness, durability, eco-friendliness etc. You can get more information here from the Rest & Digest website about yoga mats and the various types of other yoga equipment you may need to start your yoga practice.

This guide would give you an idea of what to look for in the ideal yoga equipment and mat. This is mainly to ensure that you get the best experience.

Considerations to make

To pick the ideal equipment, consider what you hope to achieve from yoga and how committed you are to the process. Here are some things that should help you in this important step.

Investment

Before picking anything, consider how devoted you are to yoga. Is it a passion, or is it just a pastime? Investing your finances heavily for something you want to do for only a short time would be illogical. In such a case, it would be better to pick products under the entry level from brands that offer quality at lower prices. If yoga is a passion, consider the highest quality and durable equipment that will last for years, as it is a worthy investment.

Durability

This is another critical consideration to make. You need to think of how often the gear is meant to be used. If you need to use it daily, the quality should be much higher than when you intend to use it once every week. The material wear and tear and how hard or easy it is to maintain should be considered. If you need to practice outdoors or move around with the yoga gear, consider its weight. Lightweight options are more portable.

Type of yoga you want to practice

Different types of yoga have additional requirements. For some people, all they need is a mat, while others need more. If you include fitness, you need a good mat and sneakers. If you aim for Pilates, you need a thicker mat to offer the best knee support. You should find out your interests before picking the ideal accessories.

Consider your values

Your values should also play a role in the decision-making process, including yoga. Depending on what your values are, think of the product design, its eco-friendliness, chemical-free materials, and the use of animal materials, among other criteria. With such information in mind, you will easily cancel out some open options, taking you a step further to pick the right product.

Health

Consider any health issues you may have before picking your equipment. Do you have sensitive joints? Are you allergic to latex? Are you hypoallergenic? Some products could be latex-based, which is unsafe for people with latex allergies. Fragile joints need better cushioning to avoid inflicting harm during your yoga sessions.

Where to source the accessories

Many stores sell yoga equipment, which makes choosing the ideal one an issue. As a general rule of thumb, stay away from large stores. It’s better to settle for a yoga specialist store instead of a multi-sport store. Working with specialists means they know yoga well and can help you make the most practical choices. You have a much better chance of getting durable and comfortable equipment from such stores.

The yoga mat

It is the most essential element in yoga and the most important among the equipment. A yoga mat is present in literally all the sessions held and is something you need to keep close without changing it frequently. The most important aspect is the quality, especially if you intend to stick to yoga for a while.

Yoga should be practiced in safety and serenity. Finding the best ground anchor is an important aspect we can’t overlook. In this case, thickness matters. However, it shouldn’t be too thick as it could compromise your balance.

  • Needs: When picking a mat, find one that matches your needs, especially if you are committed to the practice. The grip, feel, material, size, practicality, and comfort are all important when choosing your mat.
  • For beginners: If you are a beginner, start with a thick entry-level foam yoga mat, preferably from a specialized e-shop or store. Please don’t get them from large distributions, as they could be low quality. The market is flooded with PVC carpets, which are not recommended. Besides being toxic, PVC becomes unpleasant to touch for a long time, and its technical qualities are relatively poor. Pick TPE or thermoplastic elastomer instead. It is a good choice for hypoallergenic individuals. TPE is comfortable and light when used occasionally or by beginners.
  • Natural rubber mats for fitness and dynamic yoga: If you intend to carry out a lot of movements on the mat, then you need a stable material. This way, you can ensure the mat doesn’t warp or bend during the movements. This is especially true in the dynamic types of yoga. Find a soft, surfaced mat to keep all the movements fluid.
  • Choose a non-slip option: Consider this whether you sweat a lot or not. The mat grip is essential, or you will constantly be sliding. A rubber base offers better stability. A gum-like latex coating is ideal for those with no allergies.

Bottom line

Choosing the best yoga equipment can have many benefits for the user. It’s not only about safety and health; the environment, durability, cleaning, and stability are also essential to remember. With so many accessories available today, you need to pick the necessary ones for the type of practice you prefer.
