caring for house plantsDo you want to enjoy the benefits of clean air in your home? Growing plants is a great way to do just that! Plants act as natural air purifiers, absorbing pollutants and toxins in the air. Not only will it make your home’s air cleaner, but it will also add some life and natural beauty to any space. So, if you’re looking to grow plants in your home, here are some top ways to make sure the air is always clean.

What are the common toxins and pollutants?

First, it’s important to understand what types of pollutants and toxins are present in the air. Common pollutants found indoors can include dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, pollen, and other allergens. When you know what pollutants are in your home, you can plan accordingly when it comes to choosing the right plants for air purification. Namely, you’ll want to choose plants that are known for their air-filtering abilities.

What type of plants should you choose?

There are certain types of plants that are better for air purification than others. Some popular choices include spider plants, peace lilies, aloe vera, snake plants, and ficus trees. These plants work well to absorb toxins like formaldehyde, ammonia, and xylene from the air. If you’re not sure which type of plant to choose, do some research or ask a local garden center for advice.

For instance, spider plants are known for their ability to absorb toxins like formaldehyde. They also produce oxygen, which is beneficial for improving the air quality in your home. Similarly, peace lilies can absorb pollutants such as ammonia and benzene, while aloe vera is great at eliminating formaldehyde from the air.

You can make a grow room

If you’re serious about improving the air quality in your home, you might want to consider building a grow room. A grow room is basically an enclosed area where you can house plants that will filter out toxins and pollutants from the air. This ensures that all of the air in your home is clean and free of any unhealthy particles. Namely, the experts at TerraBloom advise considering an intake fan for your grow room if you want to ensure the highest level of air purification. The stale air will be drawn out of your room and the clean air will be brought in. This is a great way to maximize the air-cleaning power of your plants.

Where should you place the plants?

Once you’ve chosen your plants, you’ll need to decide where to place them for maximum air purification. Generally speaking, it’s best to place plants in the room that gets the most sunlight, as this will help them grow and thrive. Additionally, you should place your plants near windows or vents to ensure they get enough fresh air and ventilation.

On the other hand, you should avoid placing plants in rooms that get too much humidity, like the bathroom or laundry room. High humidity can cause mold to grow on your plants and lead to unhealthy air quality.

Keep your tools clean

Finally, you should always make sure to keep your gardening tools and equipment clean and free of dirt, debris, and dust. This will help ensure that the air in your home stays clean and free of harmful particles. Additionally, it’s important to use gloves when working with soil or other materials to prevent bacteria from getting into the air. The cleaner you keep your supplies, the better the air quality in your home.

Give your plants a shakedown

To keep the air in your home as clean and pure as possible, you should give your plants a “shakedown” every once in a while. This will help remove any dust or particles that have accumulated on the leaves of your plants. You can do this by gently shaking or brushing off the leaves with a soft cloth. If you do this regularly, you’ll help keep the air in your home clean and free of pollutants. Even more so, for those plants that appreciate humidity, give them a quick shower by spritzing them with water from a spray bottle. Do this on the leaves and in between the branches to help them thrive.

Repotting and pruning

Finally, make sure you’re regularly repotting and pruning your plants. Repotting will help ensure that the soil doesn’t become too compact or unhealthy for the plant. Additionally, it ensures that there is enough space in the pot for new growth. Pruning also helps keep plants healthy by removing dead or dying branches and leaves. This will help ensure that the air in your home stays clean and free of pollutants.

Repositioning

Lastly, it’s important to remember that plants need to be repositioned every once in a while. This ensures that they are getting enough sunlight and fresh air. Try rotating your plants every few months so that all sides of the plant get an equal amount of sunlight and ventilation. Not only will this help keep them healthy, but it will also help keep the air in your home clean.

Consider placing your planters on castors or wheels so you can move them around easily. This will help make sure that the air in your home stays clean and free of pollutants.

Soil type and maintenance

Finally, it’s important to pay attention to the type of soil you use for your plants. Different types of soil can provide different levels of nutrients and minerals that keep plants healthy. Additionally, make sure you practice regular maintenance on your plants. Water them regularly and fertilize the soil to ensure that they continue to stay healthy and clean the air in your home.

Meeting your plants’ needs

Giving the proper care and attention to your plants is essential for their health. Each plant requires different levels of water, sunlight, and soil in order to reach its optimal growth potential. Keep an eye out for any signs that one of your plants may not be achieving this level of success as it could indicate a need for adjustments in how you are caring for them. Not only will doing so bring life into your home with vibrant greenery but also keep the air clean by reducing pollutants found inside!

By following these simple tips, you can ensure the air in your home is always clean and free of toxins and pollutants. Growing plants at home is a great way to keep the air quality high and make sure you’re breathing only healthy air. With some careful planning and maintenance, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of having clean air for years to come.
