Budgeting for Emergencies and Quick Needs: 6 Practical Tips

moneyWhen it comes to savings goals that need organized and thoughtful approaches, there’s a high likelihood that one thinks of big-ticket purchases—for example, a new gadget, home renovation, or a long-planned vacation. That’s because the cost of these purchases can often disrupt regular finances, especially when they’re larger than your usual monthly budget.

But in truth, the same consciousness and discipline should be applied for expenses that could be used in the nearer term, including medicines, groceries, household bills, and an emergency fund that can be drawn from anytime. Without proper budgeting practices for these near-term expenses, consumers may easily start facing debt or limited funds for their essential needs.

For many Filipinos, solutions like a bank loan and app-based lending programs like Maya Easy Credit may be viable toward covering such expenses. You can start by borrowing small amounts from the Maya Easy Credit line of up to PHP 30,000 to pay bills that would otherwise be overwhelming to face, scan any QR Ph code, or checkout online to pay for your urgent needs. It’s also possible to explore transferring some of the credit to your Maya Wallet, withdrawing it via your Maya Card  as cash, and using it to pay for immediate needs.

Make it your goal to spread out your spending, manage multiple expenses, and minimize the need for borrowing or dipping into the lion’s share of your emergency savings. With that in mind, here are some practical tips for helping you budget effectively for quick needs and emergencies:

1) Plan Ahead and Be Aware of What You Spend On

The foundation of any effective budgeting plan, including one for something as simple as a monthly budget for quick needs, comprises the specific financial goals it wants to address. Rather than looking at your budget for quick needs and emergencies as a chore to save up for, break down your savings-related tasks into smaller, achievable steps. Begin by identifying exactly what you tend to spend on and researching or updating your idea of the estimated costs.

For example, you may typically spend about PHP 1,800 per month for your postpaid telco bill. But you may come up with plans to travel abroad for a month or two, which means that you’ll need more than that amount for a roaming data connection. Be aware of this and account for the additional expense as early as possible.

2) Top Up a Second Emergency Savings Fund

You may already have an emergency fund set aside in your bank account that you’ve committed to touching as little as possible. But it would help to pool money into a secondary form of emergency savings that you can expect to be more liquid than your main emergency fund.

Decide on a small, manageable, but fairly substantial amount—for example, between PHP 5,000 and PHP 10,000—to keep in your Maya Wallet. Use these funds for quick emergencies, like a sudden need to visit the doctor or buy a replacement kitchen appliance when one of yours conks out.

3) Explore Affordable Financing Options

Knowing that everyday expenses and little emergencies can quickly add up, you can boost your budget for these by exploring affordable financing options like bank loans, installment plans, or even “buy now, pay later” services to help bridge the gap. Try, for example, to find a Philippine bank that offers personal loan products with competitive interest rates, which will allow you to fund even substantial purchases without draining your savings.

Some banks offer loans specifically for home renovations or appliance purchases, where the monthly payments are spread out over a period that suits your income. Retailers also often provide installment plans with zero-interest options for items like electronics and appliances, making it easier to pay gradually without incurring extra interest.

Maya Easy Credit is the ideal type of program for first-time borrowers who need quick access to credit without the additional requirements that traditional banks might demand. The program does not require paperwork, and the approval process is fast and more efficient since it’s all done through the Maya app. Applicants need only wait for approval subject to credit evaluation.

4) Consider Alternative Savings Techniques

To make saving for small emergencies and day-to-day needs feel even more achievable, consider alternative budgeting methods to help you reach your goal. In the case of envelope budgeting, for example, you can allocate a specific amount each month for different expenses by placing cash in envelopes, including one labeled for quick emergencies. This method helps you visualize exactly how much you’re setting aside and keeps you accountable for your budget.

For larger purchases, a sinking fund can be an excellent approach. A sinking fund involves saving consistently over time for planned future expenses, like a home renovation job, well before the dude date, all so that the cost is all covered by the time you need it.

5) Track Your Spending and Make Adjustments

It’s also important to track your spending as you work toward building your fund for emergencies and essentials. You should be able to identify potential areas where you can cut back and redirect funds. Analyze your expenses each month, and you may find that small adjustments—such as reducing food delivery, cutting down on streaming subscriptions, or skipping daily coffee runs—can free up a surprising amount of money. Each peso saved from these changes can go directly to your emergencies and essentials fund, which will help you relax when it’s actually time to use that money.

6) Look Out for Deals and Discounts

Lastly, timing your purchases for day-to-day needs can make a significant difference in terms of cost, especially if you wait for major sales events like the holiday sales or monthly double-digit online sale events such as 11.11 or 12.12. These events often offer discounts or special payment terms that can reduce the overall price of a number of essential items. Even a small discount can go a long way, particularly for high-cost purchases, so it’s worth waiting for sales if the purchase isn’t urgent.

With a well-planned strategy, budgeting for near-term needs will not be so hard after all. Consider the strategies mentioned above to help you make these purchases with confidence, without compromising your financial security. Start planning today, and soon you’ll enjoy the rewards of careful budgeting with a more relaxed and self-assured lifestyle.
