A trip to Marseille – what to expect

MarseilleMarseille is one city that doesn’t get enough flowers. It is the second largest and oldest city in the country. Many tourists get carried away with Paris and miss out on this unique gem, that is Marseille. It boasts beautiful blue waters, historic towns, and diversity. Here are some things to expect when you visit Marseille.

When should you visit Marseille?

Normally, summer is the best season to visit this city. The weather is warmer, and you can explore freely and soak up the sun. However, it may be more swamped with tourists during that period. This also means you’ll spend more during your trip.

If you can, choose a date between September and December. There are fewer tourists, and you can appreciate the sights better. Your dress code depends on the season. After summer, it may be chilly, so take a sweater.

Blue waters and neat beaches

Marseille is known for its famous beaches. The atmosphere is one of the reasons people love this city. It gives off a relaxing vibe with its beautiful blue waters. There are so many activities to do here. You can play volleyball, splash in the water, or fly kites. If you just want to soak in the sunlight, it’s even more perfect.

Diversity

Marseille is also popular for its diverse community of people, especially Africans. Since it shares a border with Africa, you’ll find more Africans in the region. This means you can find a bit of African culture in this region. From herbs to food and fashion, there is so much to experience.

The streets have unique meals you’ll not find elsewhere. If you want a taste of North African cuisine with French twists, you’ll also find it here.

Art exhibitions

No ancient city can stand out without museums or art exhibitions to showcase history. Marseille has a sizable number of museums for this purpose. You can view art pieces from centuries ago. The museums also contain animal specimens, rocks, and minerals.

You can also learn about other important historical dates in these museums. A good example is the Museum near Fort Saint-Jean.

Visit the old city of Le Panier

There’s no better place to get a taste of old Europe than Le Panier. This historic city was founded in 600 BC and was occupied by ancient Greeks. Before it became Le Panier, it was Massala. The narrow roads and paved paths showcase the rich architecture of the past.

It’s no wonder the city has become a multicultural center and attracts tourists from all over the world.

See the island prison of Chateau D’If

Fans of the movie “The Count of Monte Cristo” can visit the main set for the movie in Marseille. This island prison was a fortress before it became a death trap for political prisoners. It also has an interesting storyline behind it.

If you’re looking for a cheap tour, this is one place to visit. Your Marseille tourism guide can take you through the walls and tell you the stories.

Tips to travel safely

Before traveling, ensure that you have all your travel documents. If you forget items easily, like your keys or ID cards, get a waist pouch and carry your valuables in them. Also, tourists from parts of the world with different plugs should consider getting an adaptor to be able to charge their devices.

Lastly, avoid high-heeled shoes. As a tourist, the last thing you want is a bruised foot after walking all day. It is ideal to get comfortable sneakers or sandals to ensure that your holiday isn’t cut short.
