Oral Health Is Integral to Your Overall HealthWhile everyone knows that oral health is an important part of their health, not everyone knows just how much this is the case. The truth is that oral health can affect your overall health to a great degree, so you need to take good care of it. Outlined below are some of the reasons why your oral health is integral to your overall health. They should motivate you to work with a professional to make sure that your oral health is in the best state at all times.

It Can Affect Your Self-Esteem

The state of your oral health can affect your self-esteem. This is confirmed by the fact that about 87% of adults felt that bad teeth can negatively affect a person’s life. This highlights the importance of good oral care, and it should make it clear why you need to stick to a good oral care routine. You should also make sure that your family does the same as this is a habit that will benefit them immensely over time. When you’re confident about your smile, you’ll have an easier time socializing and improved mental health.

It Could Cause You a Lot of Pain if Ignored

Failure to take good care of your oral health can cause you a good deal of pain. You may even have to take medication to deal with the pain. This means you may miss out on a lot of fun in your life as well since you’ll have to practically plan all the activities you can enjoy around your comfort. Ignoring your oral health will also potentially lead to worse issues over time. For example, according to the CDC, about 40% of adults aged 30 and above have periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. This is quite a large number of people who are suffering from a disease that could have been avoided by taking proper care of their oral health.

Poor Oral Health Can Cause Endocarditis

Failure to take care of your oral health may lead to serious issues such as cardiovascular disease and endocarditis. This is a result of the bacteria found in your mouth ending up in your bloodstream and entering some parts of your heart. This might lead to an infection in the inner lining of your heart’s valves or chambers which can cause inflammation. Stroke and clogged arteries can also be linked to infections caused by oral bacteria. This is a risk that nearly 33% of older adults who suffer from untreated tooth decay live with. They can improve their chances of staying healthy by taking good care of their oral health.

Ignoring Your Oral Health Can Lead to Respiratory Issues

Finally, poor oral health can cause respiratory issues for you. Certain bacteria in your mouth when you have an oral infection can end up in your lungs. This can lead to pneumonia and other issues with your respiratory health. You’ll need to undergo intensive treatment, and your life might even end up being at risk. This is why it’s important for you to ensure that you deal with oral health issues as soon as they occur. Failure to do so may result in life-threatening diseases.

These implications that poor oral health has on your overall health should motivate you to seek treatment the moment you have an issue with your teeth or gums. Doing so will save you a lot of pain and help you enjoy your life to the fullest. You simply need to visit your dentist regularly and follow their recommendations. Make any alterations to your oral health routine if they suggest that you should in order to enjoy amazing overall health.
