In Manhattan, it is still hard to find a coffee shop where you can just sit down with your laptop and do a little light work. It is as if these places have done so well with takeout and delivery that they are hesitant to return to normal operations. It’s not just businesses. The same is true for many individuals. No one seems to be overly eager to return to the way things used to be. Apple staffers are resisting a plan to return to work in the fall. That return to work proposal was only for 3 days a week on-prem.
Sooner or later, the return to normalcy is inevitable. And many people will be completely unprepared. One of the best ways to prepare for a major life change is to go on a retreat. Considering the pandemic hangover suffered by just about everyone, there will be a lot of demand for vacations. If travel agents are still around, this is their moment. Vacations are not just fun and games. There are serious reasons why you need to get away before returning to normal. Here are a few:
Shakedown Cruise
Before you get back to your daily commute, this might be a good time to take the car out for a spin and get it back into fighting form. You are probably aware of the bad things that can happen to a car that hasn’t been driven for a while. You might even have a car that no longer runs. Do you need insurance on a car that doesn’t run? The answer might surprise you. In most states, the answer is a resounding YES.
Once you get that car repaired and ready for action, you also need to get yourself back in driving form. Your reflexes are going to be slower than you remember and you will need to take it easy at first. By taking a road trip, you can get the whole family out of the house in a safe manner. You will also have a chance to do the little things you missed out on while sheltering in place. You can load up on convenience store snacks, have a picnic, toss the frisbee, and enjoy those small nibbles of normalcy before biting off a big chunk.
Out of the Box
You need to get outside of those walls and get used to being out in the world again. Don’t assume it is just going to all come back to you. For more than a year, you have been locked away in a home that has felt more like a prison. Even now, when you have to get out to walk the dog or pick up groceries, you are still hesitant to be around other people. That is where something like glamping comes in. Glamping is a form of camping, but in a more luxurious fashion. You can still get outdoors in safe spaces without sacrificing your creature comforts.
It doesn’t really matter where you go on your re-assimilation tour. If you haven’t been around a lot of people at once for a while, you might avoid theme parks. Instead try a beach resort where you can get as much or as little socialization you want at any given time. It will be hard to go straight from sheltering at home to re-entering the daily grind. A vacation that gets you out of the box will help you get back into the groove.
It Has Already Been Too Long
One of the best reasons to take a vacation is that it has already been too long since the last one. 2020 was a canceled year. Weddings were canceled, graduations were canceled, concerts, movies, and sports were largely canceled. You are never going to get back all that you missed. But you can restart on the right foot. Taking a break is not a frivolous pursuit. It is vital. You have gone too long without that vital refresher. Now is the time to do it before the return of the routine catches up with you.
No one really needs a reason to take a vacation. But in case you do, remember that you and your car need a shakedown cruise. Your family needs to get out of the box. And it has already been too long since the last one.
