5 Ways to Incorporate Minimalism into Your Home Décor

airflowMinimalism is about more than just home décor. Many people feel that changing the way their home is designed, also changes how it’s used and how the occupants experience it. When it comes to the minimalistic approach, the decluttering of a living space also leads to a more organized and focused lifestyle.

It’s best to introduce minimalism features to your home gradually. Those who decide to change their home on the fly usually regret it later and the home feels bare and boring. It often takes more planning and forethought to design a home when you have just a few key items to focus on.

Quality over quantity

The first rule to live by if you want to be a minimalist is to put quality over quantity. This applies to home design more than anywhere else. It’s better to have a few items per room, than a crowded apartment, if the items you stick with are chosen with care and a deliberate theme. It’s also important to factor in the environmental impact your home décor will have. Always prioritize recycling, repairing, and reusing to purchasing new items to add to your home. This is both better for the environment and a less costly thing to do. Start by figuring out what items your home actually needs (you can’t have a dining room without a dining table) and build the design in layers starting with the necessities and ending with décor and ambiance.

A palette

The color palette can make or break a room’s ambiance, and this is especially noticeable in minimalistic homes where the color is the main feature of the décor. It’s best to start with neutral, earthy tones that don’t overwhelm the sense and let your décor touches be displayed properly. Walls and flooring are the largest surfaces you have and that’s where the focus should be. It can be useful to take a hint from Australian experts such as those that install flooring in Shepparton, since they’ve found ways to implement earth tones that are associated with that area with a modern design touch. Simple beige or light blue palettes are then offset by a few bold touches in furniture or décor, and that contrast makes everything both more prominent and noticeable.

A focal point

Many designers advice to start decorating a room with a clear focal point in mind. This focal point should be the piece of furniture that draws the attention of anyone walking into a room. It could be the largest piece of furniture in it, but it doesn’t have to be. For instance, a simple brick wall can be a main feature of the room even if it’s not practical in any way. If you want to achieve a minimalistic and slick effect, it’s best if there’s no more than one such point per room. It also makes it easier to decorate a room because the layers spread out from that one particular point. The key, however, is to try and look at the room from the outside and to try to figure out what’s the central point of the room for a person entering it.

Function over form

If there’s one word to describe a well-designed item in a minimalistic home, it should be – useful. A piece of furniture needs to have a function within your home if you want to add it. By following this simple rule, you’ll eliminate almost all the items that are cluttering your space. Keep in mind that creating an aesthetic or an ambiance could also be considered a function and a purpose and you shouldn’t discard an item just because their main purpose in your home is to make it more beautiful. It’s also good to remember that these are guidelines and not rules set in stone. A home is a place to live in and that means that there needs to be room for change and for the owner’s personality to shine, even with a minimalistic design.

You may also want to look into discount wardrobes.

Invite nature in

Many feel that minimalistic homes can be a bit artificial and cold. This makes them seem like they are not really made for day to day life. There are ways to mitigate this problem and the simplest one you could try is to bring in some nature into your home. Start with making sure you have enough natural light, even if this means going into some heavy remodeling. Try to use natural materials whenever you can and don’t hesitate to add house plants as your main source of décor. Have in mind that this will also mean you need to dedicate time to taking care of them.

Incorporating a minimalistic design to your home will not only change the home, but also how you use it. A home could be transformed by sticking to the simple more-is-less principle.

I love the minimalist style in the design of your home. I love bright rooms, with dark fittings and small details that will add a zest to your home. Now I’m in the online store bed bath and beyond, I want to buy various small things for the living room to complement the interior. They have a wide selection, and very nice prices, and you can also use a coupon, which makes shopping even more affordable.
