Hiking: How It Helps You Stay In Shape For Ski Season

Optimizing The Body

Hiking is one of the best ways to exercise there is. When you hike, not only do you burn calories, but you also get a cardiovascular workout. You get a workout which increases your circulation. Your muscles are toned and tightened. And what’s more: you’re doing something that is fun and adventurous.

In fact, you are likely to forget about the exercise component – instead, you’ll be getting caught up in the moment. This is especially true the more you hike. When you’ve conquered the peak, an additional advantage is a view from the top.

Ski Advantages

If you hike throughout the year, you are going to get in shape. When the summer ends and ski season begins, if your body is in shape you’ll have more fun on the slopes. Interestingly, winter mountain sports work many of the same muscle groups as summer mountain sports like hiking.

Your quads are going to get quite a workout on the slopes. In fact, if you stop and think about it, you may find your soreness from a long day of hiking matches your soreness from a long day of skiing or snowboarding.

Furthermore, if you hit the slopes for long enough during the ski season, you’ll have a better time hiking when the snow melts too. There’s a win-win situation involved, and one final consideration: mountain air. Make sure to find a good location for making the most out of your ski trip.

Physical Considerations

The higher you are, the thinner the air—its density decreases as pressure decreases. This means to breathe, your body has to adapt to the conditions. There are a few things which will change. For example, because alcohol deprives the brain of oxygen, at higher altitudes you become inebriated more quickly—your brain is already partially deprived.

If you really want to have the most fun skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and all the other mountain activities there are, you’ll need to go higher.

Preparing For The Hike

There are a number of things you want to do in order to prepare for a hike. Firstly, you want to choose a peak, or a hill, that you know you can handle. You don’t want to tackle some 5k crag if you’ve never hiked before! It would be better to go with a 1k hike. Secondly, you must source the right equipment.

You’ll need hiking boots, pants that are flexible enough to allow you free movement, but sturdy enough to keep from being ripped as you encounter rocks and other obstacles, and a sturdy pack which can be comfortably adjusted to fit you. You’ll also want a coat that can stand the elements, but can be easily tied about your waist or stowed in the pack should things become warm as you travel up the trail.

It would also make sense to do a little research into local peaks, and perhaps see if there are any tour guides that can help you make a safe ascent. No two mountains are alike, which is part of the allure behind hiking. With assistance from a reputable guide, you can be prepared for any situation that you may encounter on the mountain.

Affordable Mountain Living

If you’re looking for cheap winter holiday packages, ski holidays are tough when you’re on a budget, but there are chalets that come without a gigantic price tag. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it, too. It just requires taking the time to “do your homework”, as the saying goes.

Whatever you decide, remember to embrace the adventure, have fun, and get out of your comfort zone every now and again. Life is about more than sedentary existence. And if you prepare before you make the jump, you’ll enjoy your travels even more.
