Finally, the summer’s coming. Hot, long days and time to take a vacation and chill out. But it’s also a time when you should be keeping an eye on your health. Taking care in the sun and not drinking too much alcohol are among the precautions you should be thinking about. Here are five ways to stay in peak condition this summer.
Don’t burn
With the sun shining, it’s tempting to spend a lot of time outside – especially if you’re away on vacation. That’s no problem. But you should be taking care not to burn your skin, which can not only be very painful but can also cause long-term health problems – including cancer.
So, if you’re planning to go to the beach or enjoy a day by the swimming pool, make sure you take protective sun creams with you which have high factors. The advice is that you should regularly re-apply them to your body and stay out of the sun when it’s at its hottest, which is around lunchtime.
And it’s not only you that needs to be protected, but your whole family does too – taking extra care of young children.
Keep hydrated
When the heat is on, you can sweat a lot – with your body losing lots of fluids. So, make sure if you’re out and about in the summer, that you take plenty of water with you to drink. This is particularly important if you’re planning to head off on a long walk or take a road trip. You don’t want to run out when the nearest store is many kilometers away.
The same applies if you’re playing sport in the heat. Make sure you take enough liquids with you onto the tennis court or baseball pitch to keep you in top condition and performance. You may also want to consider getting some vitamin and energy drinks.
Eat healthily
As with the rest of the year, you should be eating a balanced diet during the summer months – to help keep you healthy. There are lots of different fruits and vegetables available at this time of year, so make the most of them and create some tasty dishes to eat at home or to take out with you on a trip. Have a look around the web for some inspiration, check out some blogs and recommended recipes. And why not experiment with ingredients you may not have used before, such as millet.
The summer is also a great time to lay on some parties for your families and friends, so you can try out some of your dishes at your events too.
Don’t overdo the alcohol
When you’re at a summer party or event, there’s bound to be some alcohol on offer to spice things up. Try to be careful with how much you consume in the heat, as it can leave some people dehydrated and feeling rough. Enjoy yourself but moderate your drinking. It’s always a good idea to drink water alongside any alcohol.
