Get to Know Your Dog
Your dog is unable to speak to you, but that doesn’t mean they won’t tell you when something is going on. Get to know your dog and pay attention to their moods and behaviors. Over time, you’ll begin to learn little signs that something is wrong. For instance, a dog who is typically upbeat and filled with energy is suddenly sleeping a lot or sitting in the corner, this could indicate that there is an issue that needs to be resolved. The more you pay attention to the non-verbals your dog gives off, the easier it will be to detect problems before they get out of hand.
Pay Attention to Warning Signs
As your dog ages, there are a series of illnesses and diseases that could occur. Everything from canine epilepsy to dehydration, cancer, and arthritis can occur. There are signs and symptoms that you should be familiar with so that you can get your dog the treatment it needs immediately. It can’t hurt to have an emergency plan for your pet should they suddenly fall ill. This includes having a great relationship with the vet and knowing where the nearest emergency care for pets is.
Keep Your Pet Groomed
Grooming is not just a luxury provided to rich or petite dogs. It is a necessary task for dogs of all breeds. Keeping your dog groomed helps to ensure that their hair does not become dirty and matted. It also ensures that their nails are kept at a comfortable length to prevent harming themselves or others. Since pet dander can often be a trigger for allergies, grooming your dog also minimizes the chance of an allergic outbreak in the home. While you don’t have to take your pet to a professional groomer, it is ideal that you groom your dog on a weekly basis dependent upon their breed.
Maintain Good Oral Health
Humans aren’t the only ones who can suffer from dental issues like gum disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and bad breath. When you’re not keeping up with your dog’s oral hygiene, they face the same health risks. You can either use a cloth or a doggy toothbrush to clean their teeth daily. Also allowing them to chew on toys like rawhide are great for strengthening the teeth.
Your dog brings so many benefits to your life, it’s only right that you return the favor. To ensure that your furry friend is able to live a long and happy life, it is imperative to keep up with their health. Regular exercise, a good diet, good oral hygiene practices, regular grooming, and an understanding of warning signs and health risks can all help your dog live longer.
