Why You Should Know What You Put on Your Skin

what to put on skinHow many times have you lathered up your skin with products you don’t really know much about, haven’t looked at the ingredients, and haven’t taken the time to research? Chances are it has happened a number of times because most of us don’t always have the time to check these products out.

Before you head to the store and pick up your next round of skin care and skin cleansing products, though, you may want to take the time to learn about what’s in them, and here’s why.

There is a Reason the Ingredients Are Listed

Have you noticed how long the ingredient lists are on many of today’s top skin care products and cleansers? There’s a reason those ingredients are listed, and that’s because as a consumer it’s up to you to self-educate and learn about which products are safe for you, and which you are best to avoid.

For many people, there are ingredients that can act as common irritants. They may cause redness, bumps, acne, dry patches, and itchiness wherever you use the product. Most people assume that harsh chemicals would act as the irritants, and while this may be true for some people, other people may react to strong scents as well.

Common ingredients that can lead to issues include aluminum, strong fragrances, acids, certain emollients, metals, essential oils, and sulfates.

Take Control of the Ingredients

Once you start to learn about the ingredients that bother your skin and trigger reactions, then you will have better control since you will know which products to avoid. Moving forward there are a few steps you can use when trying and picking new products.

Always begin by checking the label and searching for the product with the least amount of ingredients in it. This means you have less possible culprits to rule out should you have a reaction. Next you can do a small patch test on your skin to see if you have a reaction. Make sure to give that area 48-72 hours before determining if it’s safe. The best place to do the patch test is the inside of your elbow.

If you do end up with a reaction, you’ll want to avoid using that product in the future.

Another option is for you to start making your own products. As you learn more about the ingredients that work for you and which don’t, it will become easier to be your own chemist so to speak. Making something such as your own soap is both easy and fun. Just pick up some soap making supplies and get to work.

If you’re new to soap making you may want to check out Elements Bath and Body that not only sells the supplies you need, but also has a variety of accessories, packaging supplies, and recipes you can make use of. You can even make your own moisturizer, lip balm, and more, essentially creating your own skin care line that is safe for your skin.

Taking the steps to ensure the items you use on your skin are safe and effective will result in the soft, beautiful, and glowing skin you’re after.
