Is Tap Water Bad For Me and My Family?

tap water healthyDrinking water helps to keep you hydrated. It’s also a great way of quenching your thirst when the weather is warm, or if you have been exercising. The good thing about water is that it comes straight from the tap, so it’s readily available. But just how safe is tap water, for you and your family to drink?

If you choose to, you can drink water straight from the tap. The problem is that there may be times when tap water does not look that great, or when it smells less than ideal. Even if tap water seems to be fine there could be contaminants in it that you are better not drinking. We are going to talk about the problems with tap water. We are also going to show you how you can make sure that the water which comes straight from the tap is safe to drink.

The problem with water straight from the tap

The water which is delivered to your home is first obtained from underground, or from surface water sources, by the water company. They then treat the water with chemicals such as chlorine. This kills bugs which may exist in the water, but can also adversely affect the taste of the water. Once the water has been treated it travels along pipes to your home.

As the water is making this journey, it can easily pick up dirt and other contaminants. This means that the water which comes straight from the tap in your home is often far from clean. So, if you want to make sure that the water is clean enough to drink, what should you do? The answer lies with filtration.

Why filtering tap water is a good idea?

We have explained that tap water is often contaminated. Water filtration systems remove contaminants from the water; leaving it fresh, clean and safe to drink. They do this using physical filtration, chemical filtration or both.

Physical filtration involves the use of a membrane to remove particles from the water. Chemical filtration involves the use of chemicals to remove contaminants from the water.

You can choose from a variety of different water filtration solutions; including a counter top water filter and an under sink water filter. The counter top version is the less costly of these two. This is because it does not require any plumbing. The under sink version does require plumbing. The additional work and expense can be worth it though, under sink water filters are hidden away under the sink, so they do not take up much needed counter top space. They also enable you to produce higher quantities of fresh drinking water.

Whichever type of water filter you decide to use, you and your family will benefit. You get to avoid the possibility of drinking contaminated water. This means that you can be both well hydrated and safe.
